4. That latitude and longitude are man made contrivances,
Arbitrary marks we created. They have no actual relationship to the planet itself.

7. Yeah, you're right. I guess it'd be like suggesting...
If they happened on the same time of day.

12. In this case, not interesting, but not entirely abstract in all instances

No relation to the earthquake, but the lines of latitude run parallel to the direction of the earth's rotation.

If the earth were not rotating, there would be nothing interesting about two points on the surface not defining a great circle (in which case, two points defining a great circle would be more unusual), but the coincidence here is that the (surface projection of) two points define a circle parallel to the rotation.

Lines of latitude are "naturally" interesting on rotating planets, e.g.

...since of lot of interesting atmospheric effects arise from centrifugal and coriolis forces.

5. No. Those latitude lines mean nothing geologically. They're just

map-making things. Colorado and VA are not really geologically related at all. They're on different structures.

16. Atmospheric effects, yes, but not geological ones.
Jupiter and Saturn are most interesting, and what you say is correct with regard to the effect of rotation on their atmospheres.

6. So was the epicenter of the '89 Bay Area earthquake
Loma Prieta, the epicenter, is at 37N as well. I've conveniently ignored earthquakes centered at other latitudes.

No, I don't think the CO and VA quakes are connected.

You know the Republicans will say this is somehow the Democratic Party's fault.

10. No, I was told by a very snarky DU'er that the only commonality is
.... that they happened on the same planet. So hush with the questions!

Curiousity obviously has no place here anymore.

18. Curiosity is always good. So are explanations of things.
Curiosity is just the search for explanations.

19. No, and the Colorado site has frequent small quakes
some of them approaching but rarely exceeding 4.0. There's no connection, just coincidence.

20. The date is 8-23-11. Here's the relationship to 37N.
Edited on Tue Aug-23-11 04:31 PM by valerief
8 times (2 times 3) = 48
48 minus 11 = 37

It's a sign!!!!!
