The earth is grumbling.

This morning there was a 5.3 in Colorado, the largest earthquake in the state in over 40 years.

Then just a few minutes ago there was a 5.9 in Virginia.

Isolated events? Coincidence?

Stay tuned to the real-time US earthquake report:

8. Historically, the large East Coast quakes are felt across a larger
area than West Coast quakes. I'm surprised those of you who live there do not know this stuff.

2. It's very unlikely that they are related.
They are far removed, geographically...

I would call them hugely coincidental.

3. Small earthquakes happen hundreds of times a day around the world.
Most Americans not on the west coast just aren't used to them.

4. actually a quake on the east coast isnt unheard of
a lot of people dont realize that one of the strongest quakes in US history was in charleston sc in 1886. (estimated to be as high as a 7.3)
and boston was hit by one over 6 in 1755
new york city is also at risk

6. Geologically, the phrase 'in over 40 years' and the word 'rare'
do not really go together.

9. Earthquakes in that part of Colorado are extremely frequent
but they're usually <4.0. The one in Virginia is an incredibly rare event.

19. Not really. Not with an earthquake of that magnitude.
You overestimate what fracking can do. By a lot.

14. Factually accurate, and nonetheless utterly insignificant.
For example, that part of CO experiences tremors in the 3-4 range about 6-7 times per year on average.
