"GOP mega-donor Charles Wyly dies"

Texas billionaire and major Republican donor Charles Wyly - a major contributor to Rick Perry, George Bush and the Swift Boat vets - died in a car accident near Aspen, Colo., on Sunday. He was 77.

Wyly, who chipped in millions of dollars to hundreds of Republicans over the last 20-30 years, was hit by an SUV while driving his Porsche onto a highway.


Wyly, along with his brother Sam, are considered the fathers of the 527 era and largely unregulated campaign donations.


Data from the Center for Responsive Politics shows that Wyly’s family has contributed about $2.5 million to over 200 Republican candidates and committees over the past 20 years, the AP reported. The Wylys also said they’d donated about $10 million to Republican politicians and conservative causes over a longer period of time, since the 1970s.
