I was driving to work this morning and the car in front of me had a bumpersticker that said:

4. It's a boxing term, coined by Mohammed Ali (GREATEST BOXER EVER!) and it means

you are laying against the ropes (of the boxing ring) letting your opponent repeatedly punch you while the ropes absorb the brunt of the punches, to tire them out. Then you go in for the kill when he's too tired to defend himself. :D

Rope-a-dope is used to describe strategies in which one party purposely puts itself in what appears to be a losing position, attempting thereby to become the eventual victor.
