Man detained after jumping White House fence

WASHINGTON - A man has been detained by the Secret Service after jumping a fence at the White House Tuesday night.

The Secret Service says a man scaled the fence on the north side of the White House between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

The man was taken quickly taken into custody, and a backpack the man was carrying was confiscated by Secret Service.

The contents of the backpack are being investigated.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

UPDATE:

WASHINGTON - A man has been detained by the Secret Service after jumping a fence at the White House Tuesday.

James Dirk Crudup, 41, scaled the fence on the north side of the White House between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

Crudup was taken quickly taken into custody after scaling the fence. A backpack Crudup was carrying was confiscated by Secret Service.

The contents of the backpack were investigated by Secret Service and D.C. Fire & EMS. Nothing hazardous was found.

According to the Secret Service, Crudup is homeless.

3. There are always tons of cops and tourist on the north side. I am surprised he was able to get that
far.

7. Crudup is homeless. While detained he will be in air conditioning,
receive food and if kept overnight, provided with a place to sleep...Perhaps he was just doing what he needed to do..
