Are there 24 sane Republicans in the House?
Maybe trying to persuade the teabaggers is the wrong approach. What if the 193 Dems and 24 sane Republicans would vote on a clean bill to raise the debt? Would such a bill ever make through the House? Could it withstand the obstructionist rules in the Senate?

1. Probably not, anymore. The infection seems to have spread.

Still - there IS something to be said for some strategy in that regard. The teabaggers are a big fat pus-filled malignant boil on the butts of the GOP. Turn whoever's still semi-sane into an inadvertent but helpful weapon for OUR side.

I offered this suggestion here earlier:

3. Hoyer said yesterday that he has 170 votes for the clean bill. I'd guess the GOP would block
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 01:52 PM by Parker CA
en masse since their primary goal, above fixing the economy, is to bring Obama down, and a clean bill would be perceived by the teabaggers and GOP as a win for Obama, so that's likely DOA.

8. So there are 23 Dems who would vote against a clean bill? that isn't sane either.

5. God, isn't it hysterical....
That everyone (including "our side") bends over backwards to try and persuade the teabaggers on their extreme right flank, but Democrats bend over backwards to run away from their even remotely liberal flank and instead bend over to please their Blue Dogs and Conservadems?

Oh wait. That's been said before. And it's not hysterical. It's pathetic.

7. I'm beginning to think there aren't 24 sane Republicans in the country
It seems abundantly clear at this point they need to pass an emergency clean bill raising the limit and then go about eliminating jobs by cutting government spending in all the wrong places.

It's either that or the Fourteenth.

Because the rest of these clowns likely will.

11. Most of the sane, or moderate republicans were primaried by the teabaggers.
Many of them retired as well. Can't say that I blame them, fighting batshit crazy on a daily basis takes a lot out of ya.

16. Even supposing a discharge petition, there's no way the bill could be on the floor by 8/2.
Not a viable option unless the GOP leadership allows it to happen.

17. I don't think Connie Mack of Florida is sane
If you want any sanity at all from Republicans, they are in the Senate and are probably old and been around for a long time.

18. There probably are sane Republicans
but there is a hit out on any Republican that votes for just raising the debt ceiling. Their individual lives are worth more than their country. We now have a reading on those patriots (NOT).

There is also a hit out on some of the Blue Dogs since they come from vulnerable districts. We don't have a reading on what they would do.

19. Probably yes, but are they willing to vote for it?
That's the real issue the tea party wing seems to have a chokehold over them.
