Boehner aims to release new debt plan by Sunday afternoon
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 03:36 PM by TomCADem
Source: The Hill

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told his GOP rank-and-file that congressional leaders are working round the clock on a deal set for release before the Asian markets open on Sunday at 4 p.m., a source tells The Hill.

Boehner gave few details as to the yet-to-be-seen proposal, according to an official who participated in the conference call held following a tense meeting at the White House on Saturday afternoon.

* * *
The Speaker told his colleagues that any deal will be a product of congressional leadership - not a compromise struck with the White House, the source said, noting that "strategically not working with the president, but with the Senate could be better for him."

At the White House meeting, Boehner was backed up by Democratic leaders, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, when he said to Obama, "Mr. President, I need to deal with the House and the Senate because we the White House and Congress aren't getting anywhere," the source said.

There you have it. Boehner is going to issue the House Republican plan. And, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will support that plan whatever that plan happens to be.

I guess we can hope that Republicans will be responsible, blink, and at the 11th hour drop their demands for trillions in spending cuts without any revenue in return. We can hope!

Of course, if Republicans actually offer up some revenue at the last minute, the question will be why they waited so long.

4. Boehner Could Sell Some Token Revenues To The House GOP...
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 03:47 PM by TomCADem
...by saying that cutting a deal with Pelosi and Reid will make President Obama look weak. That might be enough to sell it, since the House GOP hates President Obama so much that maybe they can craft an exception to their no new tax pledge at the 11th hour. I can only hope, otherwise, you would need total surrender on the part of Reid and Pelosi to accept an all cuts deal without any tax increase. So, I think the obvious path forward is for the Republicans to cough up some last minute face saving taxes that are enough for Reid and Pelosi to sell to their membership.

This would be the reasonable approach for Republicans, which has been anything but reasonable.

9. Exactly, Which Is Why I Think House Republicans Should Cough Up Some Last Minute Revenue
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 04:08 PM by TomCADem
...to make it politically palatable for Reid and Pelosi, rather than putting them in a position to accept a worse deal - trillions in cuts with NO new taxes - then was offered to President Obama or during the debt ceiling talks. In other words, House Republicans need to cave at the last minute by offering to close a few token loopholes.

8. This is simply political
They will present a plan filled with shot loads of cuts. They will present a few bullshit tax/revenue increases amounting to nothing. Then they will say to the Dems in Congress and the President "here you go." They will rely on the Senate Dems to vote it down and the President to veto making it look like he/they were really the ones to default. It is absolute bullshit.

Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 04:17 PM by TomCADem
...but due to political reasons, they could never agree to them with President Obama. They were hoping that he would take a no tax increase deal, so rather than give him credit, they cut the deal with Pelosi and Reid giving them the tax increases that they would never give President Obama.

At least I hope this is the case, otherwise Monday will look real scary.

happens to be." You are reading something into the story that is not there. They backed up Bohner when he said he needs to deal with the House and the Senate. But that doesn't mean Reid and Pelosi will accept anything Bohner comes up with. It just means that they agree that the plan needs to be worked out between the House and the Senate, not the White House.

Here is my prediction. In the end Bohner will blink and give the Democrats much of what they want as long as the Dems allow a few face saving measures for the GOP. Then a big portion of Bohner's caucus will rebel and vote against the plan, but it will pass with a coalition of Democrats and a few Republicans. Then it will easily pass the Senate.

That doesn't make sense. I think Republicans will cave, but they don't want to give Obama credit, so they are going to cut a deal with Nancy Pelosi, and give her the tax increases that they refused to give President Obama.

Otherwise, why would Boehner set himself up by saying that he is going to work directly with Nancy Pelosi?

28. Blame The Democrats, Give Republicans A Free Pass!
I love it how when Republicans do something like bring the nation to the edge of default, we blame the Democrats. Republicans hold up and stall DADT repeal, and we blame the Democrats. Republicans oppose financial reform, then try to gut it afterwards, and we blame the Democrats.

This is why they feel free to do what they do. The are not held accountable by the media or even liberals.

30. Boehner Said to Seek $3 Trillion Cuts, Signal for Markets
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 07:16 PM by TomCADem
Source: Bloomberg

House Speaker John Boehner told Republican lawmakers they need to provide a positive signal on a plan to avert a U.S. default before Asian financial markets open tomorrow, Republican congressional aides said.

Boehner wants at least $3 trillion in spending cuts in a two-step plan to accompany an increase in the U.S. debt limit, one of the aides said. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner warned President Barack Obama and congressional leaders during a White House meeting today of a possible reaction by Asian markets, said an official familiar with the meeting.

The markets could be tumultuous if a plan isn’t negotiated over the weekend, said Christian Cooper, head of U.S. dollar derivatives trading in New York at Jefferies & Co.

“The markets will be under very real pressure at the open because the assumption will be there is really no resolution to this,” Cooper said. “The breakdown in negotiations has crossed the line from the political posturing of the last few weeks to potentially a very real crisis.

Well, it seems like Boehner is opening up by offering an even worse deal than the one that was discussed between the White House and him, because there is no mention of any tax increases. He wants Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to take it or leave it, since the White House was so insistent on $1.2 trillion in taxes.

Hopefully, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid tell him to stick it where the sun does not shine.

But, I am sure the corporate media will Blame the Democrats and Give Republicans a Free Pass on this one because Democrats did not accept Boehner's ultimatum.

34. The Question Is Whether Reid and Pelosi Agree To The Newest Demand
...for $1 trillion in cuts up front for a short term debt limit deal with no taxes on the table, plus the promise of $3 trillion in cuts in the future. This just allows Republicans to spend the next few months like the last few months bitching about the debt without any focus on unemployment.

This is why Republicans want a short term increase. They want a distraction from the House Republican's inaction on jobs.

Unless they've got everything shorted up the wazoo and will make bank on this mess, they won't allow it to happen.

The Repukes have shaped the debate and Obama, also controlled by Wall Street has gone along with the charade. Nobody has to accept anything.

They just gave away the secret, markets don't want spooking. If they let it happen, people should investigate those shorted and profiting from this fiasco as some did on 9/11.

The corporate media does it, and the folks on DU do it by suggesting there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats. Prior to this year's Congress, raising the debt ceiling was routine.
