Social Security is not a "sacred cow", dammnit!
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 07:47 AM by MannyGoldstein
I'm so tired of this framing by "Democrats".

Social Security is *your* pension plan that's being raided so we can further reduce taxes on the wealthiest (down to the lowest rates since 1915!!!). In private industry, people go to prison for doing this shit.

Call your elected representative NOW - find their numbers in 7 seconds at http://www.contactingthecongress.org/ - and tell them that any cuts to your pension plan are totally unacceptable.

Honestly this defense of cutting social security has me absolutely boggled. I know you and others LOVE this president, but it is clouding your judgement imo.

8. Easy
I don't support cutting Social Security by a penny and I don't lose sleep over people semantics

Slash, entitlements, sacred cow, all words that aren't worth 24/7 outrage or a minute of sleep.

How do you sleep?

10. "Semantics"? The NY Times reports that congress is proposing
"deep cuts to Medicare" and you call that Semantics?

Not even your blue pen can fix that.

16. I Know, Defending Him Was Old Even Before Today! Now It's Just Asinine!
I'm beginning to wonder about the mentality of the whole thing. WHY? Why defend a person who stated HE WOULD NOT do what he's thinking of doing?

WHY?

And yes, I DO know nothing has been voted on yet, but there's a LOT of handwriting on the wall. Floating ideas is something that has been done over and over, and in the end I feel I'm getting the short end of the deal. I've been floated so much, I'm falling off the back end of ANY ship. My butt is dragging in the water now and I'm really getting SCARED!

I can't make it financially with cuts, I'm ALREADY doing all I can to keep my head above water! I sure don't want to lose what I have because I worked for so many years to keep it. Money down the drain does NOT make me feel very warm and fuzzy.

7. Right. We ALL know language is not important. Framing is not important
the consistent use of neo-liberal language by our President is not important. Calling SS a "sacred cow" - subtext: should be sacrificed. Talking about "hard choices" - meaning hard on working people, never on the Banksters or our Corporate Overlords.

Right.

11. Shared Sacrifice
Shared Sacrifice

Mr. President, please listen to the overwhelming majority of the American people who believe that deficit reduction must be about shared sacrifice. The wealthiest Americans and the most profitable corporations in this country must pay their fair share. At least 50 percent of any deficit reduction package must come from revenue raised by ending tax breaks for the wealthy and eliminating tax loopholes that benefit large, profitable corporations and Wall Street financial institutions. A sensible deficit reduction package must also include significant cuts to unnecessary and wasteful Pentagon spending.

OMG!

Shared sacrifice my ass!!!!

14. er...that was not the example I used?
personally, I think even Bernie is making a mistake by clinging to the phrase "shared sacrifice" - I know why he's doing it, it polls well. "Sharing" is a word people respond to positively. But the phrase is being used by our quisling Ds to mask an even greater transfer of wealth from us to them than has already occurred. And, we are not offered an alternative frame. I think the message should be "we already sacrificed", or maybe, "We did our share, now it's their turn." People understand "taking turns." But, I am not an adviser to Bernie.

So, understanding the thinking behind "shared sacrifice" I do not quarrel with it's use by Bernie or our few other champions - though it grates on me. I don't write Bernie in umbrage simply because I don't like it. However, I have no problem pointing out when it is plainly used to justify taking more and more from workers to give to our Oligarch Overlords, which is how Mr. Hope and Change will no doubt use it.

Using "sacred cow" - "entitlement" - or "hard choices" to justify further assault on the promise of Social Security and our shredded safety net is another matter altogether, and one you did not address.

One can always find a still-green leaf amid the horizon of bare branches in late autumn. It doesn't mean that winter is not coming.

19. And not just some "entitlement" - it is a program that we funded with our tax dollars -
and fucking Wall Street is stealing it.

I can honestly see why middle america starts saying "no more government". It's not that they are against programs like Social Security, but they see things like outright THEFT by congress critters and wall street - and they are not confused about that.

Both sides do this - both are beholden to the ruling class.

As far as I'm concerned it's time for some REAL change.

President Obama's position has been to solve our S.S. problems by raising the cap. How did that concept disappear so quickly and so completely?

He needs to keep his word instead of compromising our interests behind closed doors.

22. It is our TRUST fund
created out of a deduction out of our paychecks, in order to be kept in circulation, it then collects interest that turns into our pension. It is our money--this is the DEAL the government made with us. Nothing complex about it.

the working people of this country. The American people, contrary to what some might say, all own equal shares. They paid for it.
