Help me out here... how do we make sure that EVERY senior citizen
knows their Social Security is about to be slashed?

I can't imagine that this "no millionaire left behind" piece of bipartisan garbage will last long if seniors know that a future of peas and catfood awaits them. Millions of current seniors would be put into poverty during their lives if this thing is enacted.

Any experts on this kind of thing in DU land? how do we get the word out?

3. I think all Obama supporters should be required to call them personally -
besides that I personally have put a few things up on facebook (I don't usually do political things on there so folks will be surprised I think). If we all start with that (and twitter) it could help.

It seems like we need some sort of news network as well. Conservatives have FAUX news and we have nothing to get news out in a widespread fashion.

17. I know it and please do not call us old people.
I am 72 and do not feel or look old. You should just hope that you reach your 70s, 80s and 90s.

25. The cost of living ..... CPI
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 04:37 AM by murphyj87
Canada Pension Plan Rates and the Consumer Price Index

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) rate increases are calculated once a year using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) All-Items Index. They come into effect each January. These increases are legislated under the Canada Pension Plan Act that benefits keep up with the cost of living.

Old Age Security Rates and the Consumer Price Index

Old Age Security (OAS) rates are adjusted four times a year using a three-month moving average method. The moving average method is a statistical method used to reduce the effect of sharp changes in the CPI and thus allows for faster adjustment of OAS benefit rates to cost of living increases.

The rate increase is the percentage change between the average of the most recent 3-month CPI period and that of the last 3-month CPI period in which OAS rates increased. If the cost of living has decreased over the most recent 3-month CPI period, the calculation of the rate change will produce a negative amount. However, as prescribed under Old Age Security Act benefit rates do not decrease; they stay at the same level when there is a decrease in the cost of living. The highest 3-month average CPI remains the reference level until the most recent average CPI climbs above that of the reference level.

My company Pension does the same as CPP, but it increases in April, not January.

The CPI rises by an average of 3.6% a year, as do our pensions.

9. Lots of folks in a building my mother works(she works for the elderly) KNOW
and they also know that the need to cut SS, etc is a bullshit ploy to steal from everyone. It's a tax on the poor and middleclass.

22. The Dems have money Manny, but they would need to want to fight back.
Sanders and Kucinich even Grayson has a petition but I'd like to see a mailer with the specifics
facts for people to read and digest. Too may seniors are not reachable online.

14. Here's the problem....
Those seniors who rely on it, don't contribute large amounts of cash to politicians. Those who don't rely on SS can afford to donate big $$$ to politicians.

Which group is a politician going to care about?

in line to receive SS.
