It seems like only yesterday I was part of the American people
McCain: Americans ‘don’t want compromise’

“The principle of not raising taxes is something that we campaigned on last November and the results of the election was the American people don’t want their taxes raised and they wanted us to cut spending,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “They don’t want compromise.”

Is McCain right? Do American people want taxes raised? Well a April 29 Gallup poll suggest only 9 % of Americans want to pay for deficit with tax increases only. But wait a minute! Their? They? Democrats are talking about raising taxes on the top 1-5 % and corporations. (In McCain’s world corporations are people.) Let’s flag down a cab and head towards real street on what actual humans in Congress area arguing over:

Dec 2 2010 CBS poll 26 % of Americans thought tax cut should stay for all. 53 % were for raising above 250 K

May 4, 2011Quinnipiac University polls In order to reduce the federal budget deficit do you support or oppose - raising income taxes on households making more than $250,000? Support 69 %

June 9 ABC News poll 61% of Americans believe higher taxes will be necessary to reduce the deficit

June 7, 2011 Pew Poll Two-thirds (67%) approve of making more of high earners’ income subject to Social Security tax, and nearly as many approve of raising taxes on incomes of over $250,000 (66%)

April 18, 2011 Gallup Poll 13% of Americans say upper-income people pay too much and 59% believe they pay too little.

About the only time tax raises fall out of majority in popularity is when the poll uses tax raises blankly implying someone is suggesting raising taxes across the board. Technically McCain is right because he words it in a weasel way talking about a plan not proposed. I can only assume when McCain says They and Their he means that only the top 1-5 % and corporations count as American people. Thus we the majority that seem to vote in these polls are no longer count as American people to the likes of John McCain :o

1. Well they would also prefer to tax you and not themselves too.
To me "taxing the rich" is a proxy for "don't tax me".

7. IDK
average person these day pays a higher percentage of taxes on wages than corporations and many in the top 1 %. I think a lot of people get pissed to hear companies with billions in profit not only pay less percentage of tax then them, but no taxes at all and get government subsidies even though they are not highering more people.

Although there is some truth to your statement, in general the tax cuts offered the past 10 years have massively favored the wealthy and the vast majority of Americans don't seem happy about that anymore.

8. I think we have an all pervasive attitude where no one wants to fund government.
Everyone wants someone else to pay.

And for those who think they pay too little, why don't they write a check to the govt?

Lastly everyone wants bang for their buck and with most of our systems seeming to be inadequate one wonders what they are paying for.

2. In some cases it's not about raising taxes
it's about even taxing them at all. It's amazing "people" (corps) can make BILLIONS and not only pay no taxes at all, but get subsidies from the real people that pay taxes. :grr: :grr: :grr:

3. The biggest problem trying to get the taxes raised on
people who make over a half million a year, is that the people who make the tax laws ALL make over that much per year. They don't give two hoots about the rest of the rich, but they don't want their ox gored.

5. When Rethugs say the word "Americans" they obviously are referring to rightwingers only
b/c in their minds, conservatives are the only voting bloc that pays taxes, owns businesses/property, works for their keep, and who really matters in the big picture, the rest of US that are "left" fall under crazy-eyes' Bachmann's definition of being anti-Americans, and we can just be completely brushed-off and ignored, or much better still, ultimately become legislated out of existence.
