Sarah Palin's Rifle Scope Map marking Giffords
Source: Facebook

We’re paying particular attention to those House members who voted in favor of Obamacare and represent districts that Senator John McCain and I carried during the 2008 election. Three of these House members are retiring – from Arkansas’s 2nd district, Indiana’s 8th district, and Tennessee’s 6th district – but we’ll be working to make sure that those who replace them are Commonsense Conservatives. The others are running for re-election, and we’re going to hold them accountable for this disastrous Obamacare vote. They are: Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-1), Harry E. Mitchell (AZ-5), Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8), John Salazar (CO-3), Betsy Markey (CO-4). Allen Boyd (FL-2), Suzanne M. Kosmas (FL-24), Baron P. Hill (IN-9), Earl Pomeroy (ND-AL), Charlie Wilson (OH-6), John Boccieri (OH-16), Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3), Christopher Carney (PA-10), John M. Spratt, Jr. (SC-5), Tom Perriello (VA-5), Alan B. Mollohan (WV-1), and Nick J. Rahall II (WV-3).

We’ll aim for these races and many others. This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington. Please go to sarahpac.com and join me in the fight.

118. VERY ugly. Murderously ugly.
Murderously ugly republi-CONs.

They need to be blamed and shamed. Publicly. And as Olbermann said, shunned and ignored.

There must be no advantage or benefit or plus or payoff to what they've been doing and saying and amping up the rhetoric of anger, hatred, and violence. Incitement politics. There MUST be consequences. As God is my witness I don't know how to do that, especially with the monolithic media noise machine our side is up against. Thank God some people have actually dared to broach the subject, and point the finger where it needs to be pointed. Point fingers, not guns.

And THANK GOD for that Arizona sheriff who said what needed to be said about the culture of hatespeak in the media (especially radio). And who/what dominates talk radio anymore? Certainly not anybody on OUR side.

It needs to be said.

It needs to be said.

Again and again and again. Rub their noses in it til it seeps deeply down into the American mindset.

147. the word tragedy
To me a tragedy is an earthquake or hurricane. A natural disaster or something unforeseen. This was a politician putting a "metaphorical" (WINK!) political hit list and finding a lunatic crazy enough to take her up on it. Tragedy doesn't seem like the right word to me.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 05:45 PM by sabrina 1
referred to her 'target map of Democrats':

My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

- Sarah Palin

She needs to go away before she gets anyone else killed. And I hope that those on her target list have been given protection. This is how she lines her pockets. Inciting the fringe elements of society with violent lingo. People are turned on by such talk.

124. Maybe she should have done some praying for peace and justice before she
blew the dog whistle for her half crazed lunatic Tea-baggers to start shooting.

Just maybe a little talk about peace and justice for all with no shooting metaphors might have been safer for everyone.

But no, she's been taught by the RepubliCONS and Rupert to rile up the crazies, just like they do with the anti-abortion murderers, anti-choice terrorists and the religiously insane.

What she and Fox Noise have done is yell fire in a crowded theater and stand back and wonder why people got trampled to death. Then they get together in private and slap each other on the back for the death and carnage.

The Republicans need to rein in their high profile candidates and spokespeople before there is more tragedy. I was very worried about Palin's rhetoric on "time to lock and load" as a veiled invitation to RW crazies to do just that. I never saw the map until now.

14. Someone posted on Palin's Facebook wall about 20 minutes ago about Giffords having been on
that disgusting map, and linked to a HuffPo article about it and wanted Palin to respond. That post was quickly removed from the wall.

Palin hasn't posted anything about this yet.

There's another brief post about this now -- well, there was. That has now been removed, within a few minutes.

They're watching her wall very closely to keep all mention of Giffords being on that map off the page.

which gets new criticism of her every few minutes, criticism which vanishes within a few minutes.

I've posted the text of some of those comments (after removing the names) in this topic, but there are too many to keep posting them here.

And the last time I checked there were two discussion threads about this on her Discussions page. "Time to End the Violent Rhetoric" as well as the earlier "Are ya happy now, Sarah Palin?" thread.

Still haven't heard anything from the MSM about that map targeting Giffords.

I'm leaving the names off because even though these posts will almost certainly be removed quickly, if I post the names here some Palinut might harass them:

I hope you are satisfied with todays happening's. Maybe your message of hate will stop and maybe you will rethink your crazy actions. She was on YOUR list of districts to take back. I hope you sleep well tonight.

Murderer...you will be held accountable for the murder of Congress women Gabrilelle Gifford

So my comment was removed. So much about holding up the Constitution and freedom of speech, huh? Again, I wonder how Ms. Palin NOW feels about her bull-eye pic of various people. Ms. Gifford was #4 on her list. Any 'RELOAD' comments now?

One of those mind numb robots with nothing better to do than listen to AM talk radio all the time gets the message. Next thing we see is some Timothy McVeigh want-to-be breaks out the deer rifle he bought at Wal Mart and goes to work.

Palin will claim she has no control over nut jobs, even if they worship her.

"The vitriol we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living doing that .... That may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

Hear me Anderson Cooper? There is a time when this false moral equivalency you and your ilk practice has got to stop. What the Republicans do -- lie, harass Democratic candidates, yell "You lie!" at the State of the Union address, steal elections -- is in no way duplicated by the Democrats. Assassinations: JFK, RFK, MLK -- all Democrats. "But what about Reagan?" Shot by the son of people who had intimate ties with the Bush family.

This was an assassination attempt by a mentally disturbed person who has been fed a constant diet of hatred by Fox News, Hannity, O'Reilly, Palin, Limbaugh, et.al. Let's see how fast they distance themselves from the result of their hate-filled message.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords certainly thought the map was newsworthy. This is what she told MSNBC on March 25, 2010:

"...for example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district, and when people do that, they've gotta realize there are consequences to that action."

I would never hurt anyone but it is not because I lack the anger. The MSM and and most of the people here have been screaming bloody murder about this since before the election. It was cold blooded mass murder and she should be held criminally accountable.

Unless they reject their brown shirt tactics this will happen again. At a certain point someone on the left will probably resort to the second amendment. This in not how a mature democracy should function.

Do NOT read anything into this! I am simply expressing my very reasonable anger and frustration.

97. Gun left at Giffords' "Corner" meeting August 2009. Fears about safety then
August 2009, an event with the same name "Congress on Your Corner":

At an event held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) last week, the threat of violence led her aides to call the police after one attendee dropped a gun.

"Yelling and screaming is counterproductive," she told the Sierra Vista Herald at a Congress on Your Corner event last week. There, one visitor dropped a gun at the meet n' greet held in a Douglas Safeway, her staff says.

That has aides, who called police to the event, concerned for her safety.

"We have never felt the need before to notify law enforcement when we hold these events," said spokesman C.J. Karamargin.

One of the callers to the Service Employees International Union said, "I suggest you tell your people to calm down, act like American citizens, and stop trying to repress people's First Amendment rights... That, or you all are gonna come up against the Second Amendment."

99. You know, if a democrat would have done this back in the Bush years (perhaps even now)
there would have been outrage on right about how it was terroristic and whatnots.

Even if Palin didn't have the intent to incite anyone, it still shows a lack of ability to think out consequences. Such as one of her unstable supporters interpreting it as a message to kill. At the very least, it shows that she lacks the ability to perform an intelligent analysis of possible events that would negatively affect her. She should know that there is a lot of debate about how the right is inciting people and that it would be wise to tone back rhetoric that could be harmful... If she/they don't have the foresight and intelligence to do that, then I'd hate to see how badly they could fuck up the country if they were in charge. This shit should show the republicans that she's too stupid even for them. :/

140. found the origin. 2004 google cache..
As we speak, any (and including sara palin's map) target maps are all being removed on the web. both republican and democrat origin. gee, i wonder why

but google cache and time machine still saves them...

here is the first..

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:YOcNUdpoFCsJ:www.dlc.org/ndol_ci.cfm%3Fcontentid%3D253055%26kaid%3D127%26subid%3D171+http://www.dlc.org/ndol_ci.cfm%3Fcontentid%3D253055%26kaid%3D127%26subid%3D171&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=ubuntu

The latter is a feb current DCCC map which anybody can make (with google maps)and uses common icons and markers.

Sara Palin's "bull's eye" marker is ACTUALLY a common surveyer's mark obviously chosen for looking like a bulls eye.

We can quibble all you want about what's a REALLY a target and what's not.

In fact, we SHOULD milk this incident as much as possible and take advantage of it. Pity it's not election time. Don't let it go to waste.

But keep it real at least among ourselves.

136. Where are the words "reload" and "take aim" and the gun sights on specific people?
A target image on a state is one thing....

....telling gun supporters to "reload" and "take aim" and specific peoples names there as the targets is something else altogether. Especially when 50% of the people on Palin's map who is still a target got shot through the head yesterday.

You are correct about the punching graphic - if someone went to a Boehner rally and beat him up, and they just happened to be a DU member who had seen that graphic recently, then I agree that DU should share the blame. Free speech makes it ok to say whatever you want, but when someone takes your clear message and makes reality out of it it is up to both of you to share responsibility and possibly both be punished.

132. I don't know that McCain "created" Sarah Palin - I think he was stuck with her.
But he's got to be reeling from this - he is the one who recommended Judge Roll for the federal judiciary.

"On the recommendation of Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain, Roll was nominated by President George Bush on September 23, 1991 to a seat vacated by Alfredo Marquez as Marquez assumed senior status. Roll was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 22, 1991 on unanimous consent of the Senate and received commission on November 25, 1991<2>. Roll served as the chief judge of the District of Arizona since 2006. Judge Roll's judicial service terminated on January 8, 2011, due to death."

131. HOLD HER AND HER CRONIES RESPONSIBLE
In a court of law. She thinks that because she deleted it from her website, and deleted "lock and load" tweets, that they will go away. Little does she know, once it's on the Internet, it's a matter of Public Record which cannot be expunged.

145. Thanks for this link!
I'm having a debate about this with a group from the Irish Diaspora around the world. Many of the NI Unionist support Sarah Palin.

148. Examples Needed of Sarah Palin Inciting Violence / Hate
I'm locked in a debate and sadly don't have the time to do my own research. While I don't believe that the violent tragedy in Arizona was just one person's fault, I do believe that Sarah Palin is one of many contributors to a political climate riddled with violent language and hate speech. Can anyone provide me with some specific quotes from Palin that demonstrate this, with sources if possible?

It'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
