It's a couple making that huge committment, and I think adding a qualifier to the word marriage cheapens it. It's not different. It's not some variable. It's marriage.

And it's marriage equality.

2. Exactly.
I use the words marriage equality. Because that's what it is.

Gay marriage or same-sex marriage implies something...different. Marriage equality is couples of the same gender, in loving relationships and wanting to honor their love and committment, enjoying the same legal benefits of marriage that heterosexual couples routinely enjoy.

5. Brilliant!
Exactly!

We're using this in the solar energy business, not calling it "alternative" energy. It's just energy.

Same with marriage.

Marriage for all couples, not just some couples!!!

9. it is marriage. but on the paper it's called a civil marriage. so all these
religious zealots screaming bloody murder about it can suck it. sick of them forcing their religion on everyone else. freedom of religion... doesn't that also mean freedom FROM religion? ok. i am done. but you are right. no one actually calls it civil marriage. except on the paper. it's just plain old marriage.

10. Thank you
Check our license. Yup, no 'civil', just marriage. Married in our home by a JP, no clergy involved. Been married for 29 years now.

Normally, I'm not hostile toward religious institutions, but on this one I say "Butt out". You do not get to define marriage. Marriage is a legal contract between consenting individuals. What you call it is between you and your members. The rest of us don't have to play by your rules.

13. Well OK, but...
...if, twenty years ago, I heard someone say, "It's time to legalize marriage equality" I wouldn't have known what the hell they were talking about. "Same-sex marriage" was very helpful in facilitating understanding.

14. And there you have it.
Very true. Calling it gay marriage helps separate us out, and even that causes a distinct institution.
