BWHAHAHA: Florida Police LEAVE The Republican Party In MASS EXODUS

" Florida Gov. Rick Scott is so unpopular that he has caused the Broward County Police Benevolent Association to leave the Republican Party en mass, and they are encouraging other Floridians to do the same.:woohoo:

According to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, what pushed the police association over the edge was Scott’s union due deductions bill, which is a union busting measure in the finest Scott Walker tradition. The Florida measure would allow government agencies to collect union dues if the union is engaged in political activities.

They are so outraged that on July 16, the union will be holding a “Party to Leave The Party” event. Check out the invitations,

".....The Broward PBA wants to send a message to the Republican Party, the governor and the Republican-led legislature– those that are wreaking havoc on the lives of public employees–that we will not sit idly by and take it. Supporting the GOP means supporting those that are working hard against your interests and those who believe that labor unions are bent on destroying America...."

1. Good for that police association!
I know that cops tend to be conservative, and so this is a real move on their part. They don't do this sort of thing lightly.

May their movement only grow and spread!

Recommended.

2. They need to make this " Party To Leave The Party " go viral and become a National affair with full
Print/TV/Radio coverage. Rachel and the rest of the gang at MSNBC should also pick up on this story. Dems need to get busy and capitalize.

5. Isn't Florida where people go to retire on their Medicare and such?
Are these people crazy? Do they have self sabotage issues?

They will have less money to spend and the places where they used to spend that money will have less money, and ..........this is crazy.

He is a Republican and his brother (who is a Dem) says he is almost a nazi. But you can bet he has a good pension. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and was the chief engineer for the Predator program.

8. I'm going to sound like a dick...
But older people are more easy to manipulate. I saw it during the 2008 presidential election. McCain's strongest support came from those 60+ and it was all through scare tactics.

You have to look no further than the healthcare debate. How many seniors were out protesting government run healthcare without a hint of irony?

Not to say all old people fit this bill. My grandma was sharp as a tact. But, unfortunately, many are naive and buy into the bullshit scare tactics the right-wing loves to use (death panels!)...

23. So you disagree?
You don't think older people generally vote against their self interests out of manipulation and fear?

Or are they just selfish? A lot of old people receive medicare and social security, yet quickly protested any type of government run healthcare.

Why?

It's either because they're easily prone to accepting scare tactics or because they're complete tools.

41. I do.
I think senior citizens are no more gullible than any other group. Ask a diverse group of young people if they believe Social Security will "be there" when they get older, most will say no. And I don't see a lot of young people protesting wars that they and their friends will have to fight in and pay for.

Your statement about the 08 election ignores the large role that identity politics plays in our elections. What we saw during the health debate was a very loud minority of well-organized right wingers who managed to influence some of their peers. Progressive groups were slow to counteract the tea partiers, and less than excited about the Democrats' plan.

People of all types tend to rely on the hearsay of their peers over things they see on TV or in print. A lot of older people have not experienced the severe problems with private health insurance that we are now experiencing. The system worked pretty well for them until they hit Medicare age, so they may think our criticisms are overblown.

Politicians love to take away money from teachers and usually get away with it (save for Wisconsin).

But touch the salaries, benefits, and/or pensions of police, there's blowback.

"The Florida measure would allow government agencies to collect union dues if the union is engaged in political activities." What is the purpose of public service unions, if not for engaging in political activities, i.e., negotiating with gov'ts?

Good god, did he really think people wouldn't notice this attempt to squeeze the unions by the balls?

40. let's hope it's a movement
Floridian’s don’t much care for Scott’s gut-education/attack-workers/slash-and-burn strategy...

More than half of those polled – 52 percent – disapprove of Scott’s performance. While less than a third — 32 percent — approve.

Even among Republicans, only 57 percent approve of how Scott is doing his job. Less than half — 48 percent — of those who characterize themselves as “somewhat conservative” approve. And among “moderates,” a whopping 72 percent disapproved.

http://fcir.org/2011/03/30/rick-scotts-approval-ratings-plummet/

Florida is a swing state because of it's complacency. From what I've seen of my 50 years here they vote by watching the ads.
And few vote at that. But I bet they'll show up next time.
