Is the benefit of Weiner resigning worth the costs of a special election?
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 06:55 PM by Cant trust em
The benefits of resigning now are that the people can be represented for the next year and a half (give or take) by someone who is clean. The cost is that the special election to fill the seat will probably cost millions of dollars. Since such there is such little time before the next election (Nov. 2012), is it really worth it?

What are the other relevant costs and benefits?

This all assumes that Weiner wouldn't win election in 2012 anyway.

1. The other potential cost is a drag on the ticket for other NY and House races...
..from a candidate perceived as tainted by a fair share of the electorate.

6. I would suggest that since there's so little time for the other person to govern, its not worth it.
Just wait until the election next year and save ourselves the hassle. If this is such a big deal, then the people of NY 9th will kick him out anyway.

4. Considering It's A Heavily Democratic District...
In the 90s Dan Rostenkowski got nailed for mixing his campaign and private finances and ended up going to jail. He was forced to resign and in the special election a very liberal rushpublican won. But it was short-lived...the next general election he was soundly beaten by (wait for it...) Rod Blagoyevich.

Methinks Rep. Weiner should have thought about that calculation before he send his junk on the inner toobs. If this is a defining issue on what people vote on then this country is FUBAR'd beyond any salvation. My bets are this sorrid affair will be long forgotten in a couple weeks yet have any lasting effect on the balance of the House or the 2012 elections.

12. Rosty was not forced to resign.
He lost in the regular election in November, 1994. He went to jail after that.

8. No. Even though I'm learning he wasn't really beloved among
his fellow Dems, we need his vote. Let him stay and deal with the fallout at election time if he chooses to run again.

9. Yes. The other option is for Weiner to resign and the governor appoint a replacement. nt

10. When Sen. Craig's bathroom solicitations were revealed...
...he chose not to step down, but not to seek re-election either.

Perhaps Rep. Weiner might pursue this strategy?
