Photo of the Day (JAPAN)

Preschool children plant corn and sunflower seeds in a field in Yahagi, Rikuzentaka, Iwate Prefecture, on June 4, 2011. Salt from the tsunami has rendered the fields unsuitable for rice-growing, so corn and sunflower seeds were made into balls using clay and planted in the hope that they will absorb the excess salt from the ground. Girls press their hands together in prayer in front of candles for the victims of the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen in Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the 20th anniversary of the disaster on June 3. The pyroclastic flow generated by the large eruption killed 43 people, including local residents, firefighters, members of TV crews and other individuals. Mount Unzen is seen in the rear of the photo. (Mainichi)
