Germany to scrap all nuclear power by 2022!

Germany to scrap nuclear power by 2022
By Gerrit Wiesmann in Berlin
May 30, 2011

Germany will close its 17 nuclear power plants – which generate one-quarter of the country’s electricity – by 2022, following the partial nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan in March.

In a high-risk move, accompanied by industry warnings about price rises, chancellor Angela Merkel committed Europe’s largest economy to doubling the amount of electricity from renewable sources to 35 per cent this decade.

Ms Merkel had previously decided to prolong the operating lives of Germany’s nuclear plants by 14 years to 2036. She described the policy U-turn on Monday as “a big challenge”, though one that could put Germany at the forefront of green technology. “We have the chance of becoming the first big industrial nation to make the switch to renewable energy,” she said after her Christian Union party and their Free Democrat coalition partners agreed a series of measures.

Opinion polls show most Germans dislike nuclear energy. Ms Merkel previously defended the industry as a necessary bridge to more widespread use of renewable energy

1. Mods, we need a Nuclear Forum in the dungeon, as in the 9/11 forums.
The anti-nukers keep posting the same things over and over again for weeks after it is no longer news.

There is nothing new in your post. It to the point of being more spam.

4. So do you believe that only one article on a single subject should be permitted on DU?

And only with your advance approval?

I and probably thousands of DU'ers didn't read or noticed the article posted weeks ago.

5. You sound like a black/white
conservative. No grey, no color. Just one 'either/or' extreme or the other.
Don't you think news get old after a while, even if it is new for you. Or is this? I'm thinking your OP is just more mindless piling on and nuclear bashing.
As I said, there is nothing new in your OP. This 'news' is weeks old. Me thinks you may benefit from DU search.

I really do think there needs to be a 'Nuclear' forum in the dungeon and for the same reason. Verifiable, provable facts don't seem to matter.

6. Good
looking at Japan - it's not worth the risk. If you think it is - if you're really going to keep defending this crap - get your ass over to Japan and help those people!

10. that's ten year old news
Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 06:09 PM by reorg
The SPD/Green government passed the law in 2002 prohibiting future construction of nukes and phasing out those on the grid until 2020. The current government REVERSED this law only in December 2010, to the outrage of environmentalists and others. They might have gotten away with it, the next general election being two years away, had it not been for the tragedy in Japan which reminded us of what we do NOT want. So, the CDU and FDP became anti-nuke campaigners overnight and reversed the reversal. With some provisos: the end date is 2022 now, and until then all nukes currently in operation can stay online whereas the original plan was to phase them out one after the other until 2020. In addition, the target of 35 percent renewables in 2022 is suspiciously low. So, chances are, since people tend to forget and may focus on other things in ten years time, that the reversal of the reversal may be reversed again.
