Woman feels 'disrespected' after being kicked off train-Loud on cellphone 16 hrs
Edited on Tue May-17-11 04:52 PM by RamboLiberal
PORTLAND, Ore. – A woman who got pulled of an Amtrak train by police after passengers complained she was speaking too loudly on a cell phone said she felt “disrespected” by the entire incident.

Lakeysha Beard of Tigard was charged with disorderly conduct after police said she got into a “verbal altercation” with train passengers on Sunday. Passengers complained she refused to put down her cell phone and conductors had to stop the train in Salem, where police got involved.

Beard told KATU she was indeed talking on her phone, but said she didn’t understand why she had to be escorted off the train.

-----

An Amtrak official said a number of passengers complained Beard was being disrespectful during her prolonged phone conversations on the train. Salem police reported she had been on the phone non-stop since the train pulled out of Oakland, Calif. 16 hours earlier.

On edit she was riding in quiet car where cell phones not supposed to be used.

8. My favorite technique for dealing with loud cell-phoners
is to listen to their conversation, obviously and intently. They freak out and usually quiet down and walk away. That works particularly well in airports, but I suspect that if you turned around in your seat to listen to this fool, she would have hung up the phone.

and they can NEVER answer it on the first ring -- They stand around for 30 seconds before they realize "OH! That's my phone ringing!"

No, numbnuts, all fifty people here have stolen your unique "Air Raid Horn" sound effect ringtone...

100. Worst and most offensive ringtone EVER:
A male voice bellowing "Good morning, Muthafucka!" I had the pleasure of hearing this about every 20 seconds one morning in a car dealership service dept waiting room. The phone's owner just laughed and answered the phone, usually with another obscenity. He announced to all of us that it was his 40th(!) birthday (methinks he should have had a little more, um, maturity), and all his friends were calling him with good wishes. Everyone else in that waiting room was dumbstruck and horrified. Just my luck that he was also waiting for the work shuttle, so I got to hear this for an extra 15 minutes on the ride, until his battery FINALLY died.

Snatch it away and toss it out the window.

But yeah, why don't folks like that ever have their battery die? You're on a bus, a train, or in a public place, and it's astonishing how strong their little batteries are. I get on the phone for a minute and a half twice a week, and the battery dies halfway through the second call.

And then sat behind her. And then conversed. Y'all think a two year old kicking the seat is bad? Try a fifteen year old girl talking about shoes. I'll see that lady's 16 hours, and then raise her another 16, and if people aren't very careful around me, I will say to my daughter, loudly, "I don't know why everyone thinks Glee is so good. Vampire Diaries is much better." Then the woman would throw herself off the train. :)

19. What part of STFU do you not understand lady? I had to complain
about a co-worker recently. We have strict no cell rules at work and she was actually one of the offenders that caused the bosses to have to get nasty about it.

Occasionally it's just her and I riding back from a blood drive together. Cells are allowed while traveling but having her yammering non stop to her friends or her mom all the way is too much to take. I would rather talk or listen to music.

Like the warnings about cell phone use that she ignored before, any hints from me were totally futile. I had to complain to my supervisor and it will really piss her off. It's either cool it on the phone, or I pull rank as driver and crank the tunes anyway.

21. I take Amtrak frequently--you don't fuck with the quiet car. Ever.
Recently I took my daughter on the train to Florida--and when the conductor turned down the lights at 9 pm, you should have seen the look I got from the passenger I got behind me, when I told her she had to use headphones to watch her R-rated movie....conductor came along and offered her a choice. Headphones, or closing the computer.

And I had to listen to this women on her cell go on and on about the property she owned and how she was going to up the price of rent on her tenants. I cleared my throat and pointed to the sign in the doc's office saying no cell phones, but this fine specimen of humanity kept on with her drivel. That's when I thought that the old custom of having phone booth's was an idea whose time to return had come. I figured it would prevent a murder in the future. Had the doc not called me in when he did, I'd be in jail by now.

91. Take out a pad and pencil and start writing down everything she
says, or pretend to, and loudly ask her for her name and address. A agree with the poster who said to get very interested in her conversation. Even whisper to the person sitting next to you, who is probably annoyed as hell too. I also hate it when I go out to dinner and someone is using a cell phone. Many times this is a real estate agent talking about houses while she has a quiet cup of coffee or tea. Wish my meal was quiet. Of course, it could be anyone, but they certainly do not come in to dine.

I don't think I've ever talked on the phone for more than an hour, but then again I hate talking on the phone.

52. Not that it matters, but...
I've never been annoyed by people talking on their cellphone. But hey people are different.

I also wish we could have music at work, but my coworkers say they can't concentrate unless they are in total silence.

Strangely, I'm more annoyed by very normal things that almost everyone does without realizing it, like getting into an elevator before others get out, standing in the middle of an isle at a grocery store without moving, normal stuff that people do who have no idea they are getting in the way.

But I'm not saying anyone's better or worse. Everyone deserves respect.

63. Me neither
I fail to understand the absolute hatred many folks hold for someone talking on the phone. I mean look at some of the posts in this thread alone, there's some outright hatred, hatred at someone talking on a phone. DU'ers calling for violence towards someone for talking on the phone. Talking on the phone.......think about that.

I just don't get it.

67. Bad call. I had a very loud kid (around 20yrs old) yapping every 5 minutes...
Edited on Tue May-17-11 09:36 PM by JanMichael
...for 2 fucking hours. BEHIND me (Ie. the seat BEHIND me)on AMTRAK. Talk talk talk LOUD 2 seconds after a phone ring. Talk LOUD for that call then wait for the next. Every conversation was about a girl or a party or how tired he was from traveling from party to school and party and what he had for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, how he farted, how he slobbered when he was asleep, that a bird flew by the window, etcetera. INANE driveling loud for 2 HOURS! In a nice booming baritone I might add.

I finally got up to go to the food car and turned back and looked at him like - "I fucking HATE you - SHUT UP". I also said "Hey nice quiet ride so far? eh?". Sullen facial reply.

That FINALLY seemed to work. He shut the fuck up.

101. Man I am so with you on that!
People who have to stand right in the middle of the aisle while they decide what to buy, or walk very slowly in the middle of whereever; they seem like the people who just always occupy a lot of space. They have an uncanny ability to stay in front of you no matter how you try to get around them.

110. I've been in Chicago too long...
I'm not sure if this is exclusive to my part of the country, but people are incredibly aloof to how selfish they appear (to me anyway).

Forget talking loud on the phone. People here race to get ahead of one another whether it is on the sidewalk, getting onto a train, elevator, or whatever. I mean they aren't proving themselves better just by cutting, IMO.

I'm told it is because they are fast people, but it seems to me they are just trying to cut in front of one another, like to get the best seat. They would never admit it though. And they seem to still think they are good nice normal people. And I'm sure they are relative to one another. But when I see someone rushing to get onto a train (that doesn't leave for 5 minutes), I move out of the way... that's my instinct, not to get in front of them like it's some kind of race. I might race intellectually but not physically, that doesn't prove anything.

Maybe I'm just schizo but all these people who think they are nice, and who are seen as nice by others, don't seem so nice to me. But I still respect them.

53. Don't you just love self-centered assholes who want everyone else around them
to know what they're talking about on these fucking cell phones?

This country has become so fucking dependent on these fucking things...not a day goes by I don't see some asshole wandering around aimlessly ( sometimes, right into traffic ) with a fucking cell-phone attached to their head...just chatting and chatting and chatting away, and not a worry in the fucking world, or a clue as to their surroundings

Fucking asshole...I am GLAD she got tossed off!

109. Sure. There are even commercial models available...
...that'll allow emergency, EMS, and police-type calls to pass through without interference. But the commercial models aren't all that cheap, and yes, the FCC does frown on their usage -- but I'd love to see them allow an exception in places like restaurants and movie theaters or within 20 feet of my presence...

talk loudly into their cellphones (without them being on) for about an hour until she went crazy and jumped off the train herself. There is strength in numbers.
