Jane Corwin (R-NY), hates herself

Jane Corwin Voted to Have Women Shackled During Childbirth

In the past, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin (R-NY), the GOP nominee for the special election in New York’s 26th congressional district, called attention to her economic views by declaring that, “we need to create an environment conducive to job creation, that means lowering taxes and removing the shackles on upstate businesses.” But her colorful language about taxation strikes a stark contrast with her position on another type of bondage. She was one of only a handful of lawmakers to vote to preserve a practice that allows prison guards to literally shackle pregnant inmates while they give birth.

Last year, over the objections of Corwin and a few other legislators in the New York legislature, New York banned the practice of cuffing pregnant women as they give birth. The reforms followed a series of explosive articles detailing the inhumane conditions endured by women in prisons across the country.

-snip-

Yesterday, FreedomWorks — a front group run by corporate lobbyists like James Burnley and Dick Armey — enthusiastically endorsed Corwin, telling Tea Party activists that she embodies a “freedom” agenda. It’s true, Corwin does support “freedom” for corporations to avoid taxes. But when it comes to basic human rights, she seemed to have no problem placing metal cuffs on pregnant women as they tried to give birth.

Jane should be shackled to her kitchen stove and belittled daily for her cruelty toward women.
(bet she is a racist)

2. i can't wait til tuesday is over!! i am so sick of her negative ads!!!
i hope this district goes blue. that would be so awesome!! i see a mixture of signs.... have seen a lot of corwin around here (this is a very red area), a lot of davis too.... and have seen a few hochul. i will be voting for hochul myself. I have no idea about Corwin, but as it seems, many republican women seem to hate women or at least think we don't deserve much.

3. This was an issue in the UK in the 90s...
Pregnant women were not actually shackled during established labour, but could be shackled during hospital visits - which could involve the beginnings of labour. Ann Widdecombe, the Prisons Minister in the Major government, was an ardent defender of the policy (she is sentimentalized nowadays, especially since taking part in Strictly Come Dancing, and treated as a nice, if somewhat eccentric, National Treasure - but she was actually one of our NASTIEST Tories!) Another female Tory MP, Emma Nicholson, switched parties to the LibDems, citing this policy as one of the main reasons for her defection.
