Jane Corwin (NY-26) Voted To Allow Women To Be Shackled During Childbirth

“In the past, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin (R-NY), the GOP nominee for the special election in New York’s 26th congressional district, called attention to her economic views by declaring that, “we need to create an environment conducive to job creation, that means lowering taxes and removing the shackles on upstate businesses.” But her colorful language about taxation strikes a stark contrast with her position on another type of bondage. She was one of only a handful of lawmakers to vote to preserve a practice that allows prison guards to literally shackle pregnant inmates while they give birth.

Last year, over the objections of Corwin and a few other legislators in the New York legislature, New York banned the practice of cuffing pregnant women as they give birth. The reforms followed a series of explosive articles detailing the inhumane conditions endured by women in prisons across the country. The New York Times detailed several instances where pregnant inmates in New York were bound with heavy chains and shackles even during emergency Caesarean section procedures:”…cont…

2. My god, that's just savage. How much of a risk can a woman in labour
actually be? Wth is wrong with people, anyway.

16. It's been a while but there are actually DUers who believe a woman in labor is still a flight risk
and that she may still try to "escape" custody.

I dearly hope they are now cowed by the forces of shame so they don't appear on this thread but still, they do exist. Needless to say (I suspect), they are all men who haven't endured 8 lbs of pressure (+/-) and pain, trying to expel a watermelon out their ass, who believe any woman is going to somehow "flee" and make their way ANYWHERE while giving birth when walking is virtually impossible.

But still. Even some DU Dem men somehow believe this is possible and will advocate for shackles.

20. Depends on what stage of labor she's in...
Edited on Sat May-14-11 09:19 AM by pipi_k
Early stages....yes.

Middle stages...not so much. She wouldn't get far if she tried.

Late stages...forget it.

This doesn't mean I support shackling of women in labor. It's horrible. Even the way we were forced to give birth years ago was ridiculous. Lying on your back trying to work against gravity. Really only for the convenience of the doctors and nurses than for the comfort of the woman.

But anyway, to be precise, a woman's ability to get away depends on what stage of labor she's in.

Cuffing or shackling one while she's actively giving birth is inhuman.

21. Sorry But I See The Chances As Nil At Any Stage
It's not like there aren't guard that she will be able to outrun and even in early stages the pain would be a hindrance

23. Guess I had a different labor experience then...
At least with my first two.

Early labor was nothing more than an annoyance. Adrenaline (like the kind produced while trying to escape) probably would have nullified any discomfort...at least for a while.

In any case, restraining a woman in labor...any stage...is just disgusting.

11. Hatred Of Women
Has continued to simmer just beneath the surface it seems and now that the hounds of hell (the righties) have given up any pretense of being human we are seeing their true colors. Please spread the word on this and keep this 'woman' from a position in the government.

17. I have heard that there's research showing that when the average male citizen feels that his
life is not his own and out of control (re; work, government, etc.) he seeks to subjugate "his" women.

Exhibit A: crapass counties run by dictators -- and exhibit B: the relatively newly regressive USA

18. And Then There Are The Women Who Are Self-Haters
I would've never guessed that at this point women would still be barraged with laws that interfere with shier personal freedom. This prison shackling business was barbaric and this Corwin is seriously mentally unstable.
