I remember well the Watergate hearingsd. I also remember well, the Clinton impeachment . . . . .
Those two events were pretty compelling television, but for different reasons. The Iran Contra hearings were also a big event. So, too, was the OJ trial.

This recent thing with John Ensign, contrasted against the Oil Mobsters testifying, and looking for all the world like this guy . . . . .

. . . . . from the movies, made me think. If television wants to be entertaining and get a huge audience, go after some REALLY big guys who they KNOW are guilty and keep pushing the story. Who wouldn't watch a Bernie Madoff trial? More to the point, who wouldn't watch a REALLY big politician or well known businessman on trial? Imagine Cheenee on trial. Or Gonzo? Or the Rice Woman? Or the heads of BearStearnsGoldmanMerrilLynchEm?

That would give huge teevee ratings for years to come.

2. "a Bernie Madoff trial" . . .
. . . . is a generic descriptor. Learn to read, dude.

I shall now go back to ignoring any further posts you make in this thread, dude. (No, you're not on ignore. I just exercise self control and allow people of certain types to blather on unmolested.)

3. I listened to Watergate during the day at work....
And I watched the reruns home at night. Nixon was a fascinating character study, and a new way of looking at government, for me.

Those others got my attention. Except OJ. That wasn't about the failure of governance, which interests me.

5. I was hooked on Watergate and the
Iran Contra hearings. Yeah, would love to see trials on the people you mentioned, also Summers, Geithner, AIG, Goldman Sachs and all the others. I would watch it.

Edited on Fri May-13-11 02:28 PM by Ichingcarpenter
the Jeffrey Dahmer trial within the same couple of months of each other

Never forget that.... Dahmer's trial was shocking TV and more
fascinating than OJ

That was fascinating TV.... I only ha like 3 channels I could only get.
the one with trials

Watergate was also had the nation glued to their sets.

I'd like to see Dick, Rummey and the others on
a court TV.

BTW Fascinating comes from
the English word "fascinate" ultimately derives from Latin fascinum and the related verb fascinare, "to use the power of the fascinus," that is, "to practice magic" and hence "to enchant, bewitch."

In ancient Roman religion and magic, the fascinus or fascinum was the embodiment of the divine phallus. The word can refer to the deity himself (Fascinus), to phallus effigies and amulets, and to the spells used to invoke his divine protection.<1> Pliny calls it a medicus invidiae, a "doctor" or remedy for envy (invidia, a "looking upon") or the evil eye.

8. Go after Bush & Cheney & it'd be a SPONSORS' DREAM for ratings. Super Bowl on steroids EVERY DAY.
