MSNBC Crawl: OBAMA DID NOT USE WIFE AS SHIELD. When will they STOP this!
Edited on Wed May-04-11 08:11 AM by Distant Observer
On "Daily Rundown." This happens on all the channels. Shouldn't there be a sufficient deterrent in these companies to prevent these operators making this mistake.

It is really outrageous.

1. I've heard all kinds of people on the radio doing it, likely by accident
but you would think that, unless they really meant to do it (and blur the line of which was the terrorist, see "Judge" Napolitano's statements), someone would remember to check their typing ...

3. That what happens when you try to cover a 10 minute story for 12 hours a day.
You have to create and disseminate diarrhea.

is what i am mainly focused on and i keep saying obama instead of osama. certainly not on purpose.

i am letting this outrage go.

7. I can forgive someone doing it in speech
the context of discussing one of the two can quite often lead to slips of the tongue. But for it to keep happening in print, that's just carelessness.

Michelle strikes me as someone even a Navy SEAL would think twice about messing with. She has some guns.

12. Actually, neither did Osama.
There's only one letter difference between both names. A ton of people have made that gaffe, including myself.

15. As a journalist, copy editor, and former city editor, I can say that this is not an unusual thing.
If you have autofill or are a touch typist, it's very easy to type one word for another, particularly if you're working quickly. I don't think it's unusual for someone who's typed "Obama" many times a day for the last year to type "Obama" the first time she tries to type "Osama." It's even possible to read over it and misread it.

I said "Obama" when I meant "Osama" three times this week. It happens. With all the different media outlets we have, and all the different media feeds we compile, I'd say these errors aren't unusual.

from egregious errors aired.

26. I can't speak to the penalty--but the news director is ultimately responsible.
Again, I worked as an editor--there is no excuse for this kind of PRINT error.

27. You're right, there isn't any excuse. The problem is, print media has made it clear it doesn't
really give a shit anymore -- as long as it's first.

21. When I worked in broadcast, 20 years ago, this sort of thing could get you fired.
It's a different beast today. The 24-hour news cycle and depleted staff have taken a toll.

desks -- and the increase in errors that come with them -- for a "better" bottom line. Also, so many believed the lie that "the Internet" was "a new frontier," standards went right out the window.
