What's wrong with me?
Edited on Tue May-03-11 11:25 AM by whatchamacallit
As much as I want to, I don't seem to be able to revel in our glorious victory. I'm not aroused by blood lust or prone to military fetishism. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to justify a decade war and killing, and its continuation with shifting narratives about the taliban and "the real threat in pakistan". I still have these nagging delusions about oil and hegemony and empire. Why are others so easily able to accept the government's rationale (a mysterious super-villain) for all we've done, but I can't. I'm obviously sick and need help.

2. You missed your chance to revel.
The parties have ended and its back to business as usual. The reveling at GZ was epic though. Very unifying moment.

3. Nope. You aren't sick at all.
I can't manage it either. I'm sick of the whole vicious deal, and not entirely sure that bin Laden had anything to do with it, to boot...although I will grant that he's done enough killing of his own people in his life to warrant his death, in that 'eye for an eye' response.

It isn't going to solve anything, however, unless Obama takes the opportunity to get the military out of the middle east and remove the homeland security apparatus.

4. Nothing's wrong with you. Not many people here are "reveling" in
this. I'm not sure where you got that idea.

9. I don't know, perhaps the poster read DU?

But then again, maybe we all were transported to Bizarro DU, where it was OK to cheer on a potentially deadly development.

They were dancing on that grave like they were playing "Dance, Dance Revolution: Osama Edition".

6. maybe is you view whomever says anything about this event as "revel in our glorious"
whereas, probably, most people merely see it as the ultimate outcome of 911, well executed by obama and the seals.

if every thread you see as reveling in glory, then it is going to leave a bad taste.

i am not gravedancing. i am not celebrating a death, but i bet you preceive my position as such.

10. I am with you too.
Those scenes from the White House w/people waving gigantic flags seemed surreal. My first reaction was disbelief, not a desire to go outside and wave big freakin flag. There is just something about this that seemed so contrived and manufactured.

Would you be happier if he kept on making videos calling for jihad against us?

Are you mad we went after him?

Or do you simply not care and are emotionally dead to this situation?

31. I am glad that a serious criminal was neutralized.
It didn't matter to me personally if it was through death or removal from society. I don't feel relief because I feel that the international situation is still so unstable and dangerous. I hardly see it as comparable to the fall of Nazi Germany. It is more symbolic that anything. That said, I hope that the symbolic power seriously demoralizes the backward religious extremists following him, and hopefully leads them on the path of rehabilitation.

12. It's all about assumptions.
Bin Laden was never a super villain but it doesn't take a super-villain to commit evil, he did have money and that helped, he also siphoned the legitimate populist rage in the Middle East diverting that energy toward the U.S. and away from the despots of the region.

That worked until the early part of this year, then the Arab peoples had a democratic, Renaissance awakening, now if the United States doesn't want terrorist incidents to happen again, we'll need to place priority on the people's aspirations and stand up for our purported democratic ideals.

The only way the decade of war and bloodshed can be justified is if the people of North Africa and the Middle East embrace democracy and the United States supports them in this endeavor, that's also the only way this war will ever end.

If we continue down the failed path of narrow, nationalistic self-interest at the total expense of the people of the world, then the "War on Terror" will be as an eternal Groundhog Day, but the lessons learned along the way will be most costly in terms of bloodshed, treasure and freedom.

Thanks for the thread, whatchamacallit.
