Gallup: 58% of Democrats support debt deal, but more opposition than support from general populace
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 08:35 PM by alp227
The USA Today/Gallup poll from yesterday showed that among Americans in general, 39% supported the debt deal but 46% opposed. Among Democrats, 58% supported it, and 28% disapproved. A WashingtonPost.com blog suggested that this result reveals a "distance between Democratic voters and liberal groups bashing debt deal." Furthermore, while 50% of Democrats see it as having no effect on the federal debt situation, 30% see it as a step forward, and 14% a step backward. Among respondents who self-ID'd as liberal, 52% responded "neither"; and whether it was a step forward/backward was split an even 21%.

Republicans (28%) and independents (25%) were most likely to see the debt deal as a step backward; nearly half of all groups saw it as having no effect.

Among all groups, more predicted that this deal would worsen, not improve, the economy.

Different spin, but if Dems are the concern on Democratic Underground, the telling statistic is the majority of Dems who support it.

The fact that R's don't like it says more than Boehner's lie that he got "98% of what he wanted". Seems more DUers take him at his word than his own party. Shameful.

4. No surprise: most average Dems recognize it's the best deal that was possible.
And that it's a billion light years better than defaulting.
