4. Really? He said he agreed to wide ss cuts. I just asked a room full
of people and they all said, "Yep. That's pretty much what he just said".

Recall, it was Boehner who walked out...not Obama who told him to go (which would have ROCKED)

6. That is true
He OFFERED those cuts/savings/reform.

In the end - the irrational party of no could not overcome their irrationality.

Which begs the question - why even try?

And your right - a person does not know whether to cheer or cry.

Onward to default land ?

I still maintain that default will not occur. I expect Boehner and all the GOP WILL be hearing from Wall Street very very soon. They put themselves in this tea party box - and now know of no way out - Obama tried to help them - AT GREAT COST, I might add.

But - they cannot see themselves working with the president - in any way. Country be dammed.

43. Why not ask that room about NSPD-51?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Security_and_Homeland_Security_Presidential_Directive

Oh look! It turns out that President Bush quietly conferred upon himself the ability to create an "enduring Constitutional government," coordinated by nobody but the President himself, given a state of national emergency.

Think President Obama knows about it? Why yes, it appears he does, because last September President Obama informed Congress that the national state of emergency declared by George Bush in 2001 still exists.

Now, that's not exactly the sort of thing one wants to kick around among a public that still, amazingly, believes there is such a thing as the rule of law in this country, so the President may be saying whatever works to steer the Republicans into conference on this bill, where he can inform them, at his pleasure and in secrecy, that if he doesn't get what he wants he will begin "coordinating" Congress himself.

Who the hell needs the 14th Amendment when the previous idiot handed this President the keys to a permanent dictatorship?

54. It's sort of like a nuclear bomb.
The threat of using it is much more beneficial than the cost of actually using it.

Back in February, I successfully predicted the timetable of this crisis and observed that the Republicans are dangerously unaware of exactly how much authority they transferred over to the Bush Administration, and by default to President Obama.

I also pointed out that it looks to me as if the President can even jump-start a universal health care program through the Pandemic and All-hazards Preparedness Act, in about as much time as it takes to write a decree.

That part amuses me, as does the evidence that the Bush Administration fully outlined a legal and administrative path to despotism, which along with the threat of prosecution (see Grover Norquist's walk-back yesterday) accidentally provided this President and his party with so much power over their opposition that this doff of the cap to consensus is just so much window dressing for the public.

Behind closed doors, the Republicans are going to be told what to do, by us, and they will do it or literally risk being the first against the wall in the latest American-engineered coup, this one right here at home. I now suspect that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi both had personal experience with this situation in 2007, which may also explain why neither of them seem particularly rattled about this crisis now.

Either way, *I* was already under the bus. Whether he talked sternly at the GOP or not really doesn't matter anymore.
