TPM: Top Republicans Pour Cold Water On Obama’s Last-Ditch Stimulus Plan

Top Republicans Pour Cold Water On Obama’s Last-Ditch Stimulus Plan

Two leading Republicans say they do not support President Obama's plan to broaden, deepen, and extend a payroll tax cut to stimulate the economy in the short-term.

In a briefing with reporters in the Capitol Tuesday, the House and Senate GOP conference chairs said they're through with short-term stimulus measures, even if they take the form of tax cuts.

-snip-
"We don't need short-term gestures, we need long-term strategies that build into our system simpler taxes, lower taxes, fewer mandates, lower costs, more certainty, any changes in the debt structure of tax reform ought to come out of the Vice President's talks or part of a major tax reform," Alexander said. "If short-term government programs work, we wouldn't have 9% unemployment today because the government has tried it. So we've proved that doesn't work, unforutnately."

That bodes poorly for Democrats, who are negotiating a broad package of long-term spending cuts and an increase in the national debt limit with the GOP. As part of that plan, Obama and his advisers want to include one more short term injection of demand into the economy. Republicans seem uninterested.

Edit to add - Ezra Klein said last week that the WH wanted more stimulus but they didn't think anything like that could get passed through this Congress.

1. Well, Quelle Surprise!
What a bunch of a*holes. They really would tank the global economy to ensure Obama isn't reelected. That's just sad, and kinda scary.

3. The President really has no one to blame but himself.
He's proven completely inept at handling the Republicans.

5. LOL.
Yeah, it is his fault that Republicans have been willing, since even before he was even sworn in, to tank the economy if it helps them politically. :eyes:

12. Obama chose to shift the focus onto the deficit..
in the midst of a serious recession and unemployment crisis.

That was his decision, against the advice of most economists on the left, including even neo-liberal apologist Krugman.

Surely that means...

It's all Obama's fault! It's all Obama's fault! It's all Obama's fault!

Oh...I see you're still hiding behind that misleading image in your siggy line. How convenient.

17. Yup.
They suck. They're scum and they're like vultures when they sense weakness and someone who doesn't have the courage of his convictions and isn't willing to fight. And Obama reeks of that right now. Its ridiculous. And he has no one to blame but himself. He has absolutely no fight in him.

9. Everything is Pres. Obama's fault.....
and to date, I haven't seen you handle one Republican in any way, shape or form....
not even one! Shouldn't you be practicing what you preach to others? Cause thus far,
all of your posts are about what a miserable failure this President is.....

It's getting fucking boring.

6. See,
The repubs will cut and cut taxes if it's for the top non-working 1% - but for the rest of us working slobs....no way...

Although I'm not sure this is the way to go anyway...it just leaves FICA funds short then.

10. I think it is what the WH thought they could possibly get passed through this Congress.
There is very little ( looks like none ) stimulus anyone could realistically get through this Congress.

13. When tghere is a clash of two visions for America, there can;t be ione-sided compromises
Unless we fight the GOP on their own terms, and show them and their policies for the crap they are, we're never going to get anything meaningful.

18. So now Obama needs to take it to the people
give a major speech in the DC mall and ask for the people to join him to force congress to pass jobs bills. Have rallies same day across america so everyone can be out will signs telling congress we want them to stop blocking the bills because of wanting Obama to lose in 2012.

21. Where was the "we've tried this once, it doesn't work" with the Bush tax cuts?
And the GOP is STILL pushing for more tax cuts for the rich and business.
