CNN… Obama approval rating at 54%

A new CNN poll has the Presidents National approval rating at 54%

Even better, the President is on an upward trend

According to CNN Obama's approval rating was

48% early April

52% early May

54% Today

The good out of the poll

"Obama's overall approval rating among independents and Democrats is virtually unchanged since late April, but among Republicans it is up 12 points, to 27 percent," Holland says. "That 27 percent sounds pretty anemic, but it's Obama's highest approval rating among Republicans in over two years."

The same pattern holds among age groups. "Bin Laden's death has not made much difference in Obama's approval rating among people under the age of 65, but among senior citizens, positive views of his track record are up nine points, to 51 percent," Holland adds.
According to the poll, the president also gets a boost from his personal qualities, as has been the case since he first set foot on the national stage. Fifty-eight percent of Americans say he inspires confidence; 57 percent call him a strong leader.
And although the public gives Obama low marks on domestic issues, it appears they believe his heart is in the right place. Six in ten say that Obama cares about people, and 55 percent say he shares their values - the highest mark Obama has received on that measure since the "honeymoon" period in the months following his inauguration.

Snip….

The bad out of the poll

"On specific issues, the president's approval rating is over 50 percent on only three out of 11 items tested, and all three - terrorism, Afghanistan, and Iraq - are foreign or security issues," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But his approval rating on every domestic issue listed in the poll is well below 50 and on most of them - including the economy, health care, taxes, and the budget deficit - his rating has remained flat or dropped since the start of the year."
Only one in four says they approve of how the president is handling high gas prices. And the survey indicates that six in ten think that things are going badly in the country today."

6. I'm not sure (technically) why his ratings are solidifying above 50 but they are. theory:
He is being reversely tainted by all that is going on in the many states where Republican governments have been overwhelmingly rejected. Between just Ohio and Florida, two states that would nearly guarantee his reelection in either or, both governors are reviled. Perhaps he is getting approval by default? I mean after all many of these people are probably saying "my God, what is the alternative?"

Gas prices have started falling in Houston maybe this could be something, but I can't believe that has kicked into effect yet in polling.

I have to admit, my opinion of the average American voter has been fairly low: Our president could be conducting five wars, helping add CO2 in massive new amounts to the atmosphere and, from what I can tell, be sending cute little puppies to be euthanized by the thousands each day, but if they have jobs (has something happened here I have missed?) and can buy some new electronics, and don't feel too much pain at the pump, they will reelect him. Should we demand more from our own party's president? Or perhaps we can be satisfied that he is the presidents who has the ability to keep the other side out. That is still a discouraging thought for me.

7. He dropped 3 on Gallup and is down to 46....I saw no explanation
for this sudden dive. I know they are always lower than other polls

I think there is a definite contingency that hates it when Obama goes to another country.

8. I check gallup daily.

I have come to the conclusion that is is ALMOST an irrelevant poll. The President fluctuates between 44-51% for seemingly no reason.

Early last week the President jumped to as high as 52-53%. He was actually higher than he was when he killed Bin Laden. And to be honest, there was no reason why there was such a big spike. Conversely in the last 3 days he has come down to 46%. Likewise there is no reason why.

I still like gallup. But I don't know what is a more accurate barometer, a real good monthly poll, or a rolling 3 day average. So I just take all of them and add it to the meat grinder!

Gallup is good for one very important element. It can provide good historical trends when comparing Obama to past Presidents. This is how I know Obama is doing well. Because despite the hype, Reagan and Clinton spent most of their Presidencies in the low 40s approval wise. Both Presidents dropped into the 30s. (Something Obama never has done.)

When Bush was elected in 2004, his Gallup approval rating was 48%. When Reagan destroyed Mondale in 1984 (Won 49 states), his Gallup approval rating was 58-60%. Just something to add some perspective as to what a good number really is.

11. The president still needs to show A LOT stronger leadership than he's showing.
For example, announcing that raising taxes on the wealthy and eliminating corporate subsidies/welfare will come FIRST in reducing the deficit, and only afterward will any cuts to Medicare even be considered.

The GOP may be on a suicide mission, but our side right now (both Dem leadership and Obama) is nothing to write home about.
