Senator Dick Durbin reintroduces Fair Elections Now Act in the 112th Congress
Fair Elections Now Act Re-introduced in Congress

Apr 6, 2011 by [email protected]

Today the Fair Election Now Act was re-introduced into the 112th Congress. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) was joined by Reps. John B. Larson and Chellie Pingree, as well as actor Alec Baldwin, in a press conference announcing the legislation.

"It's an open secret that money from lobbyists, corporations, and wealthy donors buys access and influence in state capitols and here in Washington, D.C.," Baldwin noted. "It's time to reduce the influence of corporate lobbyists and special interest money. It's time that politicians listened to the people who elected them, so therefore it's time for Fair Elections."

4. The only way we will get our country back is to insist on government
financed elections. None of this electing in or out either. Pure and simple, elections for all federal offices are paid for by the government. Otherwise the politicians will all remain bought and paid for. Of course because they are bought and paid for it will take a massive demand by the people to get them to change the law. And then the Bushista Supreme Court will probably overturn the law.

6. There is truly no other way.
Sadly, I am not hopeful. I think Dick Durbin is sincere, but these bills never even got a vote in the 111th Congress--and they won't if the American people do not demand it. Too many members of Congress like the current system just fine--with an uneven playing field where lobbyists serve bundle cash to still their campaign coffers. That this is legal is astounding--and it must be changed.

I would like to see President Obama to get behind this, but am afraid there's not much hope of that with his campaign said to have their sights set on raising $1 billion dollars for 2012. It may be they have to reassess that figure. It is an obscene amount of money--struggling economy or not. My donations will nowhere match what I gave in 2008--that's for sure!

7. Sign on to be a Citizen Co-sponsor of the Fair Elections Now Act
Perhaps if enough people sign up to be co-sponsors, we can get the bill out of committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote.
