Bill Kristol: Criticism of Palin is "McCarthyism...attempt to exploit this tragedy is distasteful"
Good lord... Talk about irony overload!

Conservative pundit says criticism of Palin like 'McCarthyism'
By Bob Cusack - 01/10/11 08:34 AM ET

A conservative pundit on Monday ripped liberals who have suggested that Sarah Palin is to blame for the shooting tragedy in Arizona.

During an appearance on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal," Bill Kristol of the conservative-leaning Weekly Standard magazine called the criticism of the former Alaska governor "a disgrace."

He said there is no proof that Jared Loughner, the suspect, was a fan of Palin nor went to her website, which had labeled Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and other Democrats a political target last year; it was illustrated with a graphic of a crosshairs that has triggered a political debate.

Federal authorities on Sunday filed murder charges against Loughner.

Kristol said those who are blaming Palin, such as Paul Krugman of The New York Times, are practicing "McCarthyism."

"The attempt to exploit this tragedy is distasteful," Kristol said.

2. The cons and conservatives are not looking for cover.
They are looking for targets. They are gathering around Sarah and Sharron, and others, and protecting them, supporting them, embracing their words, while all the while pointing at the left as being responsible for Crosshair Sarah's massacre.

4. And he also added witch hunt to it after a caller suggested it.
I watched the whole thing...it is mind boggling how he can weasel out of anything and explain away any facts.

of the ones who suggested her for VP.

7. Hey, Mr. Kristol.........
The attempt to deflect any responsibility in this tragedy is distasteful.

Let them (Republicans) all stand with those who have been spouting this hate filled rhetoric! Let them show to all who they are.

8. Kristol knows that this outcome was exactly what was intrended.
"William the Bloody" knows that today's political assassinations are not directed by folks at the top. The folks at the top simply create the conditions, both through fear, and through anger, to get the deranged to take action.

This is the way you can assassinate your enemies, and claim no involvement. You make the weapons easy to obtain. You make sure that the mentally ill get no treatment. And then you do everything you can to scare them, make them angry, and convince them that violence is their only alternative,

24. I don't think it is the rhetoric on either side
Lee Harvey Oswald, Squeaky Fromme, Sara Jane Moore, Sirhan Sirhan, Samuel Byck, John Hinckley Jr, Robert Pickett etc were not exactly right wingers. Who instigated them
to fire on US Presidents? The other US Congressman shot in recent history was a democrat
killed by a henchman of Jim Jones living in Guyana. Jones was a socialist.

In the end it boils down to to mentally unstable people, schizophrenics and nutbags who
resort to violence. But politicians on both sides need to tone down rhetoric, and stop
using cross hairs and archery targets on others.

28. You're right - putting crosshairs over people and talking about 2nd amendment remedies has
no impact. The right is just being playful with rhetoric, right?

9. Somebody needs to tell these defenders...
That many, many of us felt that map and much of the rhetoric was wrong and offensive BEFORE anything happened. Back then the news outlets considered them harmless. In light of what has happened, it needs to be considered...at the very least.

Palin did not take her comments as a reason to remove the map.

Does Bill Kristol realize he's a buffoon of the highest order? Is he capable of honest self-reflection? I think not. Sad creature. Supremely distasteful himself.

17. Ill play Bill

Palin scrubbed her website right after the shooting, having this graphic (and supposedly some reload tweets) removed.

If it's not an issue, then why remove it?

Shut up Bill...Dick Durbin makes benign comments about part of our govt acting like Nazis and he is forced to come out with a withering apology...

but don't let that stop your idiot movement from calling Obama every name in the book (including a Nazi, Hitler), saying he was an interloper, treasonous, and trying to destroy America.

The revolution was sounded by the radical right. It's what they want and it's what an entire group of people got this weekend. Your revolution Bill. You can't get away from it...you have to chew on that bone Palin and others helped create. No backing away from it now.

29. William Kristol is responsible in part for Sarah Palin.
Kristol played a role in unleashing this beast (Palin) on America.
He most certainly must do ANYTHING to deflect the rightfully placed fault on Sarah Palin.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Kristol does not even have that going for him.
