Obama seeks more market access, jobs for Americans
AP

By BEN FELLER, AP White House Correspondent 58 mins ago

YOKOHAMA, Japan – President Barack Obama appealed to Asian leaders Saturday for greater access to fast-growing markets, proclaiming "the United States is here to stay" and saying its prosperity is tied inextricably to the success of its Pacific trading partners.

"America is leading again in Asia," Obama told a gathering of chief executives at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, stressing anew his goal of doubling U.S. exports over the next five years. "For America, this is a jobs strategy," the president said. "In this region, the United States sees a huge opportunity to increase our exports in some of the fastest-growing markets in the world."

At the same time, Obama said that healthy competition need not cause ruptures in relationships between and among nations.

"There's no need to view trade, commerce or economic growth as zero sum games, where one country always has to prosper at the expense of another," the president said. "The story of Asia over the last few decades is the story of change so rapid and transformative that it may be without precedent in human history," Obama added.

While recognizing the spectacular economic growth in Asia, Obama said, "We want to get back to doing what America has always been known for: discovering, creating, and building the products that are sold all over the world."

4. And what the hell else would he be doing at an economic summit?
Say he's there to help build the strength of the Chinese economy? The question is HOW is he going to "build the American economy"? If his speech in India is any key, we have nothing but more neoliberal nonsense to look forward to.

6. Here's the problem ..........
"In this region, the United States sees a huge opportunity to increase our exports in some of the fastest-growing markets in the world."

Anyone, and everyone, see the opportunity of opening up American exports to China, India, and other emerging markets.

What he failed to lay out is how he is planning to execute. Again, Obama's silence on the subject will allow Republicans to go on the offense for corporate protectionism and Obama will be forced to play defense to the point of where we get a trade deal similar to NAFTA. And we all know how well NAFTA worked out for us.

Congress, and specifically the GOP, don't negotiate trade deals, they ratify them. The OP article is about the President's efforts to get a deal. How does being directly involved in a negotiation process with other world leaders represent "silence"?

Statement from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on South Korea Trade Negotiations

President Obama showed today that he is not willing to settle for an inadequate deal that doesn't address the very real concerns of working people and small business. Given the precarious state of our economy, President Obama is exactly right in holding out for a deal that puts working people's interests first. President Obama should keep fighting for a balanced and workable trade deal that will protect the interests of American and Korean workers.

8. exports of what? Raw materials for asian industrial giants?
My how the wheel has turned. In 1700 India was the worlds manufacturing giant, 100 years later it manufactured nothing and simply supplied raw materials to the emerging industrial revolution giants. 300 years later Asia is back on top and we are the ones supplying the raw materials in exchange for their cheap domestic-job-killing manufactured products.

And what the fuck? Are you now acting as the thread safety patrol?

I am against the 30 year neo-liberal hollowing out of our domestic industrial economic base for the benefit of global capitalist elites.

16. ooo argument by content free link post! devastating.
we'll see how this plays out. My prediction is that our post-partisan president will be looking at free-trade agreements as that nirvana of common ground he can arrive at with his colleagues in the Repugnutcant Party, and like Clinton and NAFTA the price for these agreements, which are never actually free, will be paid for in high wage domestic jobs.

18. "free trade" is an oxymoron. The cost of jobs alone is nearly unfathomable. I'm not .............
sure how much longer we can keep affording "free trade".
