Highways are being shut down around the USA, yet Obama insists on continuing the Afghanistan war
He is the Commander-in-Chief; he can stop the Afghanistan war any time he wants. Or he can continue it and watch as the nation goes down the crapper.

This nation needs massive anti-war protests against the Afghanistan war. Right in front of the White House.

1. Right on, buddy. I am reading Beach Music & it involves the Vietnam protests
Why is America just apparently not giving a shit about this war? I remember Vietnam and the protests... big crowds, frequent, loud.

3. I think it's because most people are fighting to keep their jobs.
The war is remote and they don't see the connection.

I agree. We need massive demonstrations in front of the White House, and anger directed at our so-called representatives.

7. I'm right there, Peggy. I guess it's not seeing the forest for the trees
or something like that. The big picture...the connections. Most people don't get it.

30. We don't have a draft anymore.
Back then, if your number came up you were gone, like it or not. Now you have to enlist. The lousy economy does wonders for recruitment too.

5. Yes, I'm sure Obama proceeds with the mission in Afghanistan just for the hell of it.
It must nice to live in a world where a president can end a war on a moments notice with there being no consequences whatsoever.

9. No no, not "for the hell of it." For money. For empire. For vanity.
But I guess by your inane "mission" framing you bought it hook line and sinker, didn't you?

12. Yes, it's all some sort of big conspiracy .....
It's not like George W Bush started the war, then ignored it for 8 years leaving it for the next president to clean up, is it?

13. The MIC is a conspiracy. It's not exactly hidden, though.
Anyone who can read can figure it out. Bush didn't ignore it, because winning is not only impossible, it's also not the objective. It's a gigantic trough full of blood money and Obama is either unwilling or unable to say no.

34. I want a perfect world. Do you want a perfect world? Who WOULDN'T want a perfect world?
For a perfect world to even be conceivable, the US would have to bring all its weapons and personnel home from their forward bases and occupied territories.

Seriously, you don't want a perfect world?

6. Funding for road repair around here
is at a bare minimum. They have resorted to drizzling hot asphalt in the cracks in the road. As hot as it gets here in the south, these can be dangerous when riding a motorcycle because with the heat they become soft and sticky....imagine taking a sharp curve on a motorcycle and making the mistake of getting your front tire on one of those sticky 'tar snakes'. A friend of mine totaled his bike when he hit one and slid off of it.

14. Early this year, with the stimulus money, the city fixed many miles of public streets and
constructed two railroad overpasses. It created lots of jobs here and its still continuing. No complaints here. I get a kick out of a lot of DU'ers that think Obama can wave a magic wand and make everything, that they think should be done, done.

mention Obama or the stimulus money? I just stated what the road situation is where I live in the rural South. Our county has over 11% unemployment, a poor area to say the least.

36. Maybe, just maybe, without THE WARS, stimulus money wouldn't have been needed for street repair...
Ever thought of that? Maybe if we stopped spending all that money on wars, there would be money in budgets for infrastructure.

I really wouldn't mind as long as they're replaced with high speed rail, which Obama is funding. It's another one of his progressive accomplishments that gets ignored around here.

It seems like half the highways in the country are under construction. Dammit. There are these funny signs by all the construction sites too, but who reads those anyway?

then that money was immediately be used to pave roads because that's how our system works. Right?

I really, really cannot believe that so many people here are so easily manipulated by outright lies like that.

I better check out I-95. It was being worked on yesterday and I got caught in traffic in it due to the new construction (the sign there says it is from the American Recovery Act). But if it's being closed, after all, better check!

27. Actually, we are finally getting highway access where I live.
They are extending the highway in Bristol, CT, the next town over. Although I must agree, we are wasting resources in Afghanistan. Of course, spending on highways and infrastructure has to go through Congress as well. And then it is up to the states to use it productively.

38. "He can stop the Afghanistan war any time he wants."
I really doubt that. I think it would likely be much more complicated than that, and that even the most peacenik President who absolutely wanted it stopped would have logistical problems.

Further, POTUS disagrees with you and thinks it is needed for our security. Disagree with him about that fine. But you are speaking as if he did not disagree with you and assuming bad faith from someone who does.
