Obama signs Equal Pay Law

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2009/01/29/4431409-obama-signs-equal-pay-law

With the stroke of a pen, President Obama signed his first bill into law and fulfilled a campaign promise to help make it easier to sue for equal pay.

The bill is named for an Alabama woman who found out her employer, Goodyear, had been paying her less than her male counterparts for years, but she was prevented from suing because of a statute of limitations in effect at the time. The new law effectively extends the statute of limitations.

Obama spoke often of the equal pay issue during the campaign, as did then-rival Hillary Clinton. And the president made special note of the fact that this was the first piece of legislation he was signing into law.

"It is fitting that the very first bill that I sign -- the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act -- that it is upholding one of this nation's founding principles: that we are all created equal, and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness," he said.

etc.

but lets just continue stabbing him in the back because some are so easily led by their noses by Fux Gnus.

Paycheck Fairness Act: Obama Pushes For Equal Pay For Women
by AP on JULY 20, 2010

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is calling on Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, which he calls a common sense bill to ensure that women get paid as well as men for equal work. The legislation would make it easier for women to sue employers who pay them less than men. The House passed the bill in 2009, but it failed to clear the Senate. Some Republican lawmakers have argued that the bill could aid trial lawyers more than it would help women. The administration’s Equal Pay Enforcement Task Force also recommended Tuesday that the federal government collect better data from businesses so it can more effectively track wage discrimination in the workplace.

1. Most doing the slamming are former Hillary supporters.....
I do hope that he uses this situation as a reason to go after the propaganda machine that is the right wing media after announcing that Ms. Sherrod has her job back.

8. Lily Ledbetter is a good start
But without the Paycheck Fairness Act and ALL that is in there - her efforts are worthless. Let's also give kudos to those six women at walmart that fought 'the man'. ;-) Both have lead to a point where we (women) have a chance to NOT lose out on between 700K and 2 Million dollars in our lifetime simply for being born women.

He's got to put pressure on Congress to make this happen. He simply has to. This is pure, clean, and simple historic legislation. First was suffrage, then came equal access to education. That education however is worthless if we don't have a fair shot at the do-re-mi.

Lily Ledbetter I'm quietly clapping for. But Paycheck Fairness Act? That's the brass ring. That's the one that will make women have to OPT out of Class Action Suits. That's the one that requires everyone from AT & T to Joe Schmoes Plumbing to have to PROVE that they had a solid, valid, reason to start a man and woman on the same day, with the same experience, and the same education - at different rates of pay.

I posted about this in the Women's Issues Forum but will make clear: In December 2007 I was "promoted" at a major wireless carrier and was to/did manage several people. Hmmm . . . I was offered one salary level, and went back for more (they were giving me a 7K raise for a huge increase in responsibility). I was able to get it raised to a 20K increase.

Imagine my surprise when I learned the male on my team was making 10K more than me.

Think about that. Lessons learned and I won't be suing. But there will come a day when I leave (hopefully in the next 6 months as I've started my own small business) - and when I do . . . in the exit interview? I'm going to bring a copy of his salary sheet to it and simply state: Forget the small business and leaving for other opportunities. And no - I won't be selecting you as my carrier because of 'this'.

It happens. Every. Single. Day. To. Women. In. America. And it's shameful.
