Retiring Rep. Vern Ehlers endorses Pete Hoekstra in governor's race

GRAND RAPIDS -- U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers said fellow Congressman Pete Hoekstra has the skills to get Michigan's economy going again.

"This race is extremely important -- look at what's happened under this governor -- I can't believe John Engler, if still governor, would have presided over the demise of Michigan," said Ehlers, R-Grand Rapids, after endorsing Hoekstra on Wednesday in the Republican gubernatorial primary.

"We need a good governor that has a lot of common sense ideas about how to get the economy turned around. I've come to know Pete really well and respect his abilities and think he has the right temperament."

This is the second major GOP primary endorsement this week from Ehlers, who said he generally tries to stay out of "inter-party squabbles."
