Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't...between a rock and a hard
place...between the Devil and the deep blue sea. I honestly don't know what to think. He made his decision after careful thought. I voted for him because he has a brain and he uses it. I trust that he made this decision with the country's best interests and security in the center of his mind and I will watch and wait and hope that the decision was the right one. His Generals better cut the crap, get the job done and get us out of there. I hope he told them that in no uncertain terms...I bet he did. So flame me, its cold tonight.

6. I'm not a history expert but I don't think the circumstances are quite
the same. BTW, Truman did drop the bomb you know.

3. President Obama was a breath of fresh air and talked to Americans
as adults. My take is he had no choice but to continue because the threats are not gone towards America.

The most dangerous region in the world is not where we want to be, but we have no choice at the moment.

15. I respectfully disagree. We always have a choice. Nixon won the presidency on a end the war ticket.
After he became president, he said he had no choice but to escalate. He was wrong and millions died.

The security of this nation is endangered by a prolonged war in Afghanistan. We are spending billions apparently to save lives in Afghanistan while we can not afford decent health care for our own people.

He has a choice. IMO he made the wrong one.

8. He inherited more than just bush's war. He inherited cheney's willful neglect
If the US had helped the people of Afghanistan by building a few schools, a few roads, a few basic medical outposts when they were done fighting the Soviet Union, what a different world we would be living in now.

I trust that the man is doing the best with a very bad, and long cultivated, situation.

No flames from me, Raven.

9. I have heard some credible people on MSNBC
discuss this far more rationally than what is going on here:

Ron Suskind, Lawrence Wilkerson.

Am I happy about this? Not particularly, but Obama never promised to leave Afghanistan so anyone who is disappointed because they somehow thought otherwise wasn't really paying attention.

There are no good solutions to this. 7 years of mismanagement leaves little to salvage. It's like taking a cake recipe and substituting paprika for cinnamon, salt for sugar and lighter fluid for butter, letting it sit for 7 years then handing it off to the next cook and expect the perfect wedding cake. The ingredients handed to Obama will never result in anything palatable.

All bad choices. Every last one of them. I hope his choices do not lead us to a failure that will result in a repug taking over in 2012. Been there, done that. 1968. Don't want to do that again.

I agree with everything you said, we elected Obama because he promised to use his intellect to make decisions. But when he does he seems to piss people off and I don't understand why...he made the right decision and yet he is criticized for it!

19. You may be convinced that "he made the right decision",
but the op never said that. He said he hopes it is the right decision. Big difference.

he could not safely do that. (This is an example of how far out I am on the limb hoping for and supporting him).

hardened to it. As I mentioned elsewhere here, I voted for Nixon over Humprey because Nixon promised to end the Vietnam war. I was taken.

All I can say is escalation is not the way to end a war.
