Obama to critics: I told you so

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 13, 2010; 3:42 PM

BUFFALO -- President Obama had a simple message Thursday for the Republicans who have tried to thwart his economic policies.

I told you so.

In a defense of the often unpopular actions his administration has taken to confront the economic crisis, Obama told employees of an expanding manufacturing company here that he was right and his critics were wrong.

"Today, we are heading in the right direction," Obama said. "Those tough steps we took -- they're working. Despite all the naysayers -- who were predicting failure a year ago -- our economy is growing again."

Standing in front of heavy equipment in a manufacturing bay at a company that has added workers, Obama said his critics should have to admit that the steps he took -- and they opposed -- ended the recession and have begun to add jobs, if slowly.

"I knew that if we didn't act boldly and quickly -- if we didn't defy the politics of the moment and do what was necessary -- we would have risked an even greater disaster," he said, calling out the Republican Party as having been "in power when the crisis happened."

2. "we would have risked an even greater disaster"
This is the part the "naysayers" can never address... the what if... the giant elephant of a what if in the room. What if Obama had done nothing, what if Obama had allowed the naysayers to prevail and did nothing?

He hasn't done everything I'd like to see done, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let that get in the way of giving him props for all the good he's done.

4. Prepare for a rash of "HOW DARE YOUUUUUUUUU"s from Republicans everywhere.
I think we elected a guy who actively enjoys trolling his opposition.

7. Good. Yes. Hallelujah!
Every single Republican in the House voted against the Recovery act.

I demand to hear this repeated 1 million times between now and November. Preferably by Obama.

8. Abraham Lincoln
I once read that someone asked Lincoln which barnyard animal he considered the wisest. He replied it was the hen. When he was asked why the hen ,he said because she does not cackle until AFTER she has laid her egg. We have "miles to go" before this economy gets well and there are as many factors pointing to a deteriorating economy as an improving one.As Kipling so wisely wrote "Don't look too good or talk too wise".

10. What do you think this economy would look like now
if Obama had taken the advice of republicans and done nothing? Better or worse?

14. This country would have flat-lined and crashed
we were losing 270,000 jobs a month that number could have increased dramatically as employers looked for ways to cut their losses and try to stay in existance.

15. Not sure
Possibly worse, but my reading and observing lead me to believe the economy has as much chance ,probably more,of deteriorating in the next year(s)than of improving .This is not a matter of Obama doing wrong things ,it is simply a matter of how things look right now in the world economy of which we are very much a part. Here are a few things to consider.1 Our deficit for the month of April was 40 billion dollars ,this is the month the govt. collects the most money from income taxes ,last year it was 20 billion.Income tax receipts are down year to date ,I think 8% ,not good.2.The dollar was trading against the euro 1.33 for a euro on March 26th,it is now 1.25 . Remember when Obama just a few months ago said we would increase our exports dramitically ,well if the euro continues to slide ,and many experts believe it will, for a number of reasons, this will make our exports to all 27 countries of the EU much higher .This is not good for our economy.3. The number of homeowners that have a mortgage and are under water has just risen to 28% ,this number continues to rise.4. Two of the wisest gurus of the financial system worldwide are both pessimistic,Nouriel Roubini and Nasim Taleb, when they talk most financial people listen.5. It is true on the jobs numbers more people got jobs in the last month than in quite awhile but the % unemployed increased from 9.8 % to 9.9% .I could go on ..................

18. Actually, Nouriel Roubini sounded quite optimistic considering.....
on his interview with Charlie Rose a couple of days ago.
No, he wasn't bullish either, but he did speak of improvements in the economy,
although he did say that in order to keep inflation away,
that at some point budget cuts will be called for,
as well as possible tax hikes (although the Health Care bill coupled with the non renewal
of the Bush tax cuts for top income earners are in the pipeline and are exactly that)....

He and Charlie Rose even discussed the fact that military spending appears to be heading
for some cuts.

He also said that we are not at this time headed for a bubble,
and the financial regulations are the right steps,
although he'd want stricter ones (although the bill is still being shaped in the
the senate, and it appears that it will be stronger than first estimated), and says
that the Volker rules would indeed be similar to reinstating Steagall.

Look up the interview on the internet.

19. Yes, Abraham Lincoln didn't have corporatemediawhores
and internet liars doing everything to bring President Obama down.

It's just the right time for him to tell it like it is.
