How the White House Wins by Losing
How the White House Wins by Losing

Senior White House officials tell the Washington Post that they are pleasantly "surprised" that Senate Republicans are still blocking consideration of bank reform legislation.

"Ahead of the first vote on Monday evening, the assumption inside the White House was that Republicans would back down and allow the debate to begin, said one top Obama adviser, who asked for anonymity to discuss White House strategy. The fact that they didn't plays 'right into their narrative.'"

"He called it a 'proof point' for the American people as they try to assess which party wants to stick it to Wall Street and which party is trying to protect the banks and institutions from new and onerous regulations if the legislation passes."

1. this is also the reason
for Obama's overtures of bipartisanship. He wants to make it crystal clear that there is only ONE party that does not want to play ball and it's not the Democratic Party.

6. Precisely..No one can say the President has
not extended his hand in bi-partisanship and taken it back just before the gNOps bit it off.

11. Actually, and quite sadly, there are people who blame Obama and the Dems
for lack of bipartisanship. It is precisely because the Corporate Media has allowed the Republicans to repeat this lie over and over again without correcting them or taking them to task. Dems also need to hit back harder on this.

2. Well let's hope they get enough votes today!
(not)

I think this thing can go a few more rounds before it gets tricky.

3. Republicans
If they continue to fillerbuster reform they will be helping the White House. What is the top Issue
for 2010? The economy. This allows Obama to go across the country, and for the ads online and TV to
hit Republicans over the head with protecting wall street. The new Washington Post poll has Obama more
trusted on Economy and Financial reform. They may help remind voters why Republicans were thrown out In
2006,and 2008.

4. Yeah, I'm not surprised the Dems aren't phased by GOP resistance this time.
They know they're right--and they know the vast majority of the country is behind them.

The paper is also strongly against the new immigration bill. Another shocker.
