A photo that would scare the crap out of asshats like Glenn Beck on his pro-nuke tirade

Reagan and Gorbachev in the 1986 Reykjavik Summit discussing getting rid of nuclear weapons by the year 2000...

I'd like to see Beck and the other wingnuts condemn Reagan and as an added bonus, mispronounce the word "Reykjavik". Hell, just for yucks, I'd like to see them point to where Iceland is on a map...

15. Holding to side arms---Alzheimer's red flag.
He was taught that, in therapy. Holding on to things helps keep one more focused in the moment. Also lessens the 'fear of falling' some patients have.

6. HA!!! You can't fool us! That's really Edward Platt...
...with some theatrical makeup on his head.

Reagan was just fooling about "getting rid of nuclear weapons," hoping to throw the Soviets off guard by having them spend needless man-hours determining if that was really Gorbachev.

And don't forget, Platt was Chief of some secret American intelligence agency!

Reagan was playing 84th dimensional checkers!

16. Reagan was not a veteran.

A flag pin in the lapel signifies the wearer is a military veteran. Anyone wearing a flag pin who is not a veteran should be treated like a fake.

21. Actually Reagan was a veteran...
He served as a Captain during WWII for the US Army Signal Corps making movies. He never left Hollywood, and made other military films as well; one I recall was where he was "flying" over Berlin, it was ham acting at it's "best", he was a dud.

On the other hand, Jimmy Stewart actually flew combat missions, others were in combat as well. The guy from Green Acres took Marines into the beaches at several islands in the Pacific; the guy from Gone With the Wind flew combat missions and many others were in various theaters doing various things. Even Ricky Riccardo was a Master Sgt that had a band and he often worked in combat theaters.

I had never heard that only vets wore flag pins, Madeline Albright has numerous flag pins, some of them pretty hefty. PO occasionally wears a flag pin...then again so did bush, who skated out on his obligation...and cheney, who never served.

22. I believe it was Newt Gingrich who changed the tradition.

The tradition caused Republicans problems since, at the time, nearly half of all Democrats in Congress were veterans while very few Republicans were. I knew a few vets who were angry at the Republican trashing of the tradition. I knew a lot more who assumed the Republicans WERE veterans and wouldn't listen to the truth.

But it was definitely changed well after Reagan's time. It is possible Reagan did not view himself as a "true" veteran, having served in Hollywood. Or maybe I am crediting him too much and ignoring the obvious: before the Gingrich Revolution the flag lapel pin was just not that ubiquitous in political circles.

I once Googled some of those films...they are hysterical...:D

Reagan came to believe the roles he played in some of those movies...long before Alzheimer's took it's toll.

26. Reagan took a lot of flack at the time for wearing brown suits. I don't know why.
I'm NO fan of RR, but at least he didn't wear the fucking "uniform" all the time: navy suit, white shirt, red or maroon tie. Every once in a great, great while, you'll see an exception to the "uniform" in the halls of Congress. But very rarely. Even President Obama has surrendered sartorial freshness for the robotic sameness of the uniform. His idea of shaking things up is wearing a BLUE tie.

And because, yes, I notice these things, I'll tell you, Members of the British Parliament have their own uniform: Gray suit, light blue shirt, blue tie. Watch Prime Minister's Questions sometime. The uniform is everywhere...

27. I always thought bush looked like he was headed to a funeral...
then again, I'm no fan of suits anyway, especially a tie. Damn noose, that's all it is.

Men look fine in suits, if that is what they wan to wear, women on the other hand can wear just about anything, which automatically makes them more appealing. Even those potato sacks that Laura Bush wore gave her a fighting chance of looking somewhat independent. FWIW, Michelle can wear just about anything, and when PO takes off the jacket and gets "down to business, I think he looks more accessible.

All things considered, pols generally don't appear "human" when they wear the same old crap day after day, the only change being a ghastly tie...:D

19. Those talks were suddenly, mysteriously halted
According to Wiki: The Reykjavik Summit was a summit meeting between U.S. president Ronald Reagan and Secretary-General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, held in the famous house of Höfði in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, on October 11-12, 1986. The talks collapsed at the last minute, but the progress that had been achieved eventually resulted in the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union.

I heard from a friend in the FBI that the reason was that RR had an Alzheimer's episode and was whisked away back to the US. Gorbachev was reported to have said something along the lines of, "This guy is in charge of the USA? He doesn't even remember who I am."
