Dean and 500 Followers March for Health Care Reform

Dean and 500 Followers March for Health Care Reform

By Julissa Treviño

No one will be claiming a turnout of two million, but Howard Dean and company managed to draw a healthy crowd for their health care rally today in Washington’s Dupont Circle.

About 500 people turned out this morning to push for health care reform and stand up against health insurance companies. The message of the rally? Health insurance companies and reform opponents should stop being greedy and help insure the millions of people who need health care. Organized by Health Care for America Now, a national grassroots campaign fighting for affordable health care, the protest couldn’t attract the thousands that some anti-health care protests have drawn, but it still managed to assemble one of the larger crowds of pro-health care rallies.

Speakers, including Dean, the former governor of Vermont and founder of Democracy for America, and Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP’s Washington bureau, called attention to the need for demanding immediate health care reform.

Members of the dozens of labor unions and community organizations participating in the rally held signs reading “Stop Corporate Lobbyists,” “enough greed and selfishness” and “I kill for profit,” among many others.

8. Rick Sanchez covered it, but only to let everyone know how
crazy the Dems are for. He focused on the arrests, and questioned whether this has been sanctioned by the White House or DNC.

I was listening in my car and I thought for minute these "crazy" people must be carrying guns and signs depicting the President as Hitler or the Joker or something. But then I remembered only sane and serious-minded people do that.

9. Tha's probably why this was covered......
cause they will be covering the shit out of the next T-Party.

They, the media, want to "feel" that they weren't "Biased" against Liberals,
although they are.

7. This should have been more publisized here - I know I didn't here of it
The fact is the media does exaggerate the tea party numbers - and never cared about the huge anti-war rallies - but I wonder how many DC area people even heard about this. (To avoid being embarrassed, I just looked at the activist forum, which I admit I forget to follow, but there is nothing.

10. Let it be known that Dean's group does not want just any health reform bill
"Thousands will be in the streets today to protest the insurance companies and their skyrocketing profits while our health goes by the wayside. We'll be out there, risking it all, to show Congress how you stand up for what you believe in, and challenge them to pass health reform that works for us, not the insurance companies."

http://blog.healthcareforamericanow.org/2010/03/09/arresting-the-insurance-companies-live/

It is unclear what they mean by that; but it cannot be said (in case someone gets the wrong impression) that the group does not just want to pass the current Senate-bill-inspired plan in Congress.

Protesting insurance companies is pathetic? What have you done to support health reform?

Any marches? TV Ads? Print?

What about a key blog post?

HCAN gets more credit than most groups for beating down the health insurance industry's BS and advancing reform.

They are protesting FOR private insurance, some of which will be subsidized straight from the government coffers.

Why so defensive? When not posting here are you skipping work, out there in the rain, demanding mandated private low actuarial valued policies?

Health care reform is going to pass despite the lame mischaracterization of the bill by the all or nothing posers.

"all or nothing" is a straw man (which is something called a logical fallacy in an argument, but I imagine you've yet to familiarize yourself with the term, right?)

26. The link said Obama's proposal brings us nearer the goal
Edited on Tue Mar-09-10 06:21 PM by angelicwoman
And asks that Congress do it and "do it right."

I agree with them that it has to be done right, and that we're not there yet (nearer the goal).

If Obama doesn't deliver a public option, HCAN will be dissatisfied. Let's hope he and Congress deliver.
