Obama proposes removing anti-trust exemption for insurance companies

President Obama is proposing that insurance companies lose their anti-trust exemption, spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

"This better promotes more affordability and innovation" though greater competition among insurance companies, Gibbs said.

The announcement comes just two days before the major health care summit with Republican and Democratic congressional leaders.

Repeal of the exemption is being considered by the House. Obama made his views known through a Statement of Administration Policy.

1. That is an excellent idea. But would it pass the Senate?

6. About damn time
This will help much more than the magic, ambiguous public option Id wager. Still, its an unknown how far these companies will be willing to race to the bottom to suck up market share, at the cost of depriving shareholders of profits. Essentially, its an experimental measure in the grand scheme of things, but one that is neutral to good and completely necessary.

9. Yeah buddy!
Its a fluke the exemption has lasted as long as it has - removing it is in the best interest of the insured.
