David Broder (on Sarah Palin): "The lady is good."
Of course he thinks that. She's smarter than him. :eyes:

Sarah Palin displays her pitch-perfect populism

By David S. Broder
Thursday, February 11, 2010

"Take Sarah Palin seriously."

"This was not the first time that Palin has impressed me."

"I gave her high marks for her vice presidential acceptance speech in St. Paul."

"What stood out in the eyes of TV-watching pols of both parties was the skill with which she drew a self-portrait that fit not just the wishes of the immediate audience but the mood of a significant slice of the broader electorate."

"Palin's final answer to Wallace showed how perfectly she has come to inhabit that part." (of Populist)

"The lady is good."

1. She's not populist.
She is against everything the populist movement is/was for. ESPECIALLY higher wages for the working person. She NEVER mentions wages for the workers in America and that was a KEY point of the populist movement.

I tire of revisionist history from the media.

19. Populist does not have to have an ideological definition
Edited on Thu Feb-11-10 09:10 AM by karynnj
Wikipedia in an interesting discussion of what "populism" is included this:

"One of the latest definitions of populism comes from Daniele Albertazzi and Duncan McDonnell who, in their volume Twenty-First Century Populism, define populism as "an ideology which pits a virtuous and homogeneous people against a set of elites and dangerous ‘others’ who are together depicted as depriving (or attempting to deprive) the sovereign people of their rights, values, prosperity, identity and voice"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populism

Now, the type of populist you refer to is an advocate for the poor and the movements that you would call populist would all be from the left. Like you, that is what I first think of as well.

But, some of the momentum behind Palin does fit the definition above. Just listen to talk radio (small doses are useful), they are demagoguing and rallying people against the "elites", where the "elites" are the intelligentsia on both coasts and the MSM, which they claim is liberal.

It is a mistake to reduce everything toeconomic status. That was why Obama's primary comment at a fund raiser was wrong, even though he survived it. People CAN, SHOULD and often will vote for non-economic values - and we are proud when that happens on our side.

As a Jew, I have always heard the old comment that we earn like Episcopalians, but vote like Puerto Ricans - always said with pride for living our values. In a book discussion group at my synagogue on Norman Podhoretz's Why are Jews Liberals?, the discussion was totally one sided - against the author's contention that Jews were not thinking when they continued to vote for Democrats even though it was against their economic interests. (He also claimed that the Republicans were better for Israel.)

Now, this is the opposite side. These are people ana they are voting what they see as their non-economic interests. They are powerless people speaking against the elites that they think are against them.

What some people have tried to do is to reach the people by trying to show where our values come from and that on some things - like healthcare, environment, and economic fairness - our values are similar to theirs. We need to tag the Republicans with policies that have hurt them.

In 2006 and 2008, we benefited from the anger at where the country was going. The scary thing is that the right seems to now have some success making us the target. (One of the scariest things to me is that they are actually linking the banks and corporations to the Democrats - and not the Republicans.)

Thanks to her the US is now a bilingual

she is tuned in to a very vocal minority in this country. and because they are very vocal, their pov is the one we hear about.

and btw, i am clueless. why are people all in an uproar and why is it a talking point that obama uses a telepromter.

The guy who defended Nixon years after the rat bastard resigned finds Sarah Palin compelling?

I'm shocked.
