31. I was born in April of 1930, so Hoover was president
then. But I claim FDR and John N. Garner as my cradle Democratic administration. I forget who followed GVP Garner, but Harry Truman was the last VP and was landed with the presidency with very little preparation when Roosevelt died so suddenly. He did well after he got it all together. I liked him, but he had a hard act to follow.

Remember that show "Thirtysomething?" I was twenty-something at the time. When my older, Boomer siblings were picking out daycare centers, I was picking out a college (OK, maybe there ARE some similarities there).

17. Pretty amazing we had no VP for 4 years
That would never happen now.

Truman had the fullest plate imaginable: ending a world war, dealing with the post-war recession, labor unrest, shortages, negotiating the tricky terrain of post-war Europe and the unsettling of old alliances while holding firmly to others, the Marshall Plan, NATO, recognizing Israel, the UN charter, etc.

about Ike was my father saying, "All he does is play golf."

Fortunately, I have no memory of Tricky Dick as Veep.

Unfortunately, I have way too many memories of him later on. But at least the last one is a good one...:applause:

154. we wouldn't remember Truman, of course.
I do remember the TV commercial for Eisenhower--must have been for his re-election--the "I like IKE" song with a cartoon to go along with it. I would have been four years old so it's possible.

Do you remember the Nixon-Kennedy debate on TV? I do. Since my parents were Repubs (still are!) we kids played a game where we screamed and put pillows over our faces when Kennedy would be on screen, and would cheer when Nixon came on. What did we know--we were eight and six years old.

How time has changed things.

26. We feared a Quayle presidency back then
But in hindsight, he looks like a towering genius compared to her. An airhead, to be sure, and a RW nutcase, but he allowed himself to be tethered to reality once in awhile. Even Teddy Kennedy worked with him in the Senate sometimes.

Bad as Quayle might have been, W. was worse, and if Palin or anyone like her ever came within 100 feet of the office, I cannot even fathom the abyss we'd all be staring into.

For years I thought my dad was a Republican (we were never close) until we talked much later in life and he revealed he was a Democrat. I only wish he'd lived another 5 years to see Obama in office. I would have had his ass out there campaigning too, even though he was stubborn and thickheaded (the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree unfortunately).

For some reason I always thought you were older. Maybe the lack of the word "ass" in your postings.

But now that I know your ass is barely older than my ass, that respect I've been showing is over.

42. It wasn't so much who was there
when I was born, but rather my first memories. I grew up with a portrait of Ike on the wall of every classroom I was in until Junior High. (Yeah, back then we called it Junior High)

I thought it was illegal to have anyone else as president. I had a sheltered childhood so it wasn't until later that I learned what crap went on under Ike and the dick.

Lots of Haitians, or just generally Afro-Caribbean/West Indian people seem to be more so Republican when they arrive. That is until they face the whole "racism" thing and then they back off. There was a role reversal with my parents when Bush II came around and due to Clinton.

On a side note, the first awareness I ever had as a child of the presidency was the day that Nixon resigned. Both parents (conservatives) were extremely somber and I asked why. Mom said that the president had lied which struck me very hard emotionally. It was out of my own realm of thinking that someone so important to the world would actually lie (of course now I know better!).

Bartlet/Hoynes were elected in 1998, inaugurated in 1999. In the ridiculous world of the West Wing where their presidential elections happen on the years that real world midterm elections.

182. Dwight D. Eisenhower - I'm a boomer.
I remember when Kennedy was killed. I met Nixon, Carter, and GW Bush - all before they were President. I had tremendous respect for LBJ and Carter compared to most folks because of the social reforms and international peace initiatives.

I protested the Vietnam war when I was A1 in the draft (71-72). The Watergate investigation was daily TV in my college student center.
