1. Too true
This why the repugs are fighting Health Care Reform because if real reform passes
and is made into law then the party that passes it will be seen as a friend of the
American people.

5. Public Option
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 10:08 AM by 90-percent
The Public Option I think would follow the same trajectory of Medicare legislation in 1965. I am not an expert on the history of medicare's inception, but I think it was a hard fought win by Dems with fearsome Republican opposition. Once it was in placed and tweaked a little bit, it was widely appreciated by those it was intended to serve.

I think the same exact thing would happen with the public option. If they put it in place, say, TOMORROW, that would give voters enough time to realize how magnificent it is and how much it benefits the lives of the poor and middle class.

That public satisfaction would insure a Democratic landslide in 2010.

However, it seems these days that all people in elected office feel they are there to preserve the status quo and also serve the Corporations by taking away even more from the people.

Dems don't seem to want to win or be in the majority at all because it takes away their excuses for being so ineffective. Like if we had 95 Dems in the Senate instead of the current 59 they still wouldn't get anything done!

10. All 58 Senate Democrats eventually agreed to the public option.

60 - (58 + 1) = 1 vote shy - then
60 - (57 + 1) = 2 votes shy - now

So we might as well give up on all progressive legislation, including healthcare, for the remainder of this year and work on getting a net gain of 2 Senate seats. If successful, we can finally get some shit done next year.

17. Medicare was widely popular
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 02:09 PM by Blasphemer
Depending on the poll, the public option has polled either nearly as high as Medicare polled in 1964 or 1965 (according to Gallup, Medicare had 63% support in 1965) or equally high. However, the industry's effort against HCR made the landscape very different than it was in the 60s. The last 30+ years of the GOP beating the anti-big government drum has had a lasting effect. The effort to enact real HCR needed to be strong, decisive, and confrontational. Cutting deals with Pharma to get their support was the wrong approach. The key was using public opinion as a weapon against the Corporations and the Politicians in bed with them.

11. Because they want people to shut up and accept the bill
and live in their fantasy world. Or maybe it's because they don't want to acknowledge that MANY Americans feel the same way we do and this is not just DU. People are getting tired of the Democrats already and it's only been 1 year. And to think we looked so strong in 2008. So sad.

16. The progressives are all over the place bragging about sending
a message to Washington. Howard Dean did so last night on Hardball. Callers from Stephanie Whatsername on AIr America this morning bragging about the same thing. Some progressive dude on XM POTUS this morning -- ditto. Arianna -- ditto.

They're claiming credit so I'm just agreeing with them.

18. "Sending a message" does not equal "getting a public option".....
.... so it still stands that no one voted for a republican to get a public option.

Yesterday, we released a poll we commissioned from Research 2000 taken immediately after voting ended on Tuesday night in Massachusetts. The results send a clear message to Democrats in Washington: Be bold, fight for more change -- not less, and pass healthcare with a public option.

Thank you for everything you do.

Granted, it's been a long time since I learned to read, but I'm pretty sure I can still master it and that letter from Democracy for America says "Mass voters sent a clear message . . . pass a public option."

Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 04:24 PM by Phx_Dem
When they sound as proud of themselves as they do, I equate that with bragging. Sending e-mail to raise money because "we polled the Mass voters and we sent a message that we want a public option" sounds like braggin to me. (from a DFA e-mail today)
