President Obama Heading to Massachusetts to stump for Coakley on Sunday.
Edited on Fri Jan-15-10 01:58 PM by jefferson_dem
President Obama will campaign in Massachusetts for Martha Coakley on Sunday, White House and Democratic Party sources tell TPMDC.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is set to announce the news at today's press briefing, This past Monday, Gibbs had said that there were no plans to visit Massachusetts.

The polls have been all over the place on this election, but are in general agreement in the sense that the turnout model matters very seriously. If younger voters and more committed Democrats turn out, Coakley will win. If older and less Democratic voters make up a greater part of the electorate, Republican nominee Scott Brown will win. Obama's involvement could potentially make the difference for Coakley in turning out his natural support base -- and if it doesn't, expect a lot of talk in the press about how Obama couldn't win the race.

4. I hope so too. I'm not sure it will because
he is pretty toxic here in MA right now(due to HCR). I hope very much that it helps though.

10. Toxic?
His approval in Mass. is still in the mid- to upper-50s, from what I can see, which isn't really what I would label "toxic."

Certainly not with a majority of Mass. folks.

Now Coakley on the other hand seems to be having some trouble lately, but Obama isn't doing so bad.

17. Well, you get on the ground here then. I'm talking from
real life experiences not polls. She was the favorite here and Republicans were not energized UNTIL she flipped to be in support of the HCR bill. Those are the real facts here out in the real world. Sorry it doesn't fit with your theory from VA.

21. Well, being from CT, most of the people I know are not against the HC bill. It is the economy
they are worried about more then anything. Voters desperate in this kind of an economy will take it on on those in office, regardless of who caused the problems to begin with. But I think this race is more split then totally in favor of Brown. It will be a close one.

22. I guess we'll see just how happy they are down there in CT
when the mid terms come around. I was born and lived in CT and CT is no MA, just saying.

23. There are some differences as CT can actually be more conservative at times
We have very, very wealthy areas here and currently have a Repub gov though Rell is a moderate.
But even in the Suffolk poll the economy was listed at the top issue. It is the top issue in the entire country.

27. Well if people think the antidote to a "toxic" Dem President is a Republican,
then they're just bringing more pain to themselves.

What's the quote? "Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people" or somesuch? Never seems to fail.

3. Andrea Mitchell called this just a while ago -- she intimated she thought he
would probably end up going, but posed the concern that it might be a "Copenhagen" blowback if Cokely loses.

11. I hope this works
I think I would literally vomit if we lost Ted's seat to a republican. I'm pretty pissed at Coakley for thinking her primary win guaranteed her the seat, but I am still talking to everyone I know to make sure people are going to get out there and vote. I can't stand Brown or his smarmy little brats.

25. IMO, here is hope that he can energize the black, minority vote
Don't know the approval rate among this group, but it's still up around 90% or more overall among African-Americans.

Don't live in MA, but read the AA newspaper called The Bay State Banner.

They have a section called "Roving Camera" section asking as to why turnout was very low among this group.

http://www.baystatebanner.com/Roving-Camera60-2009-12-17

All of them had various reasons, but here is hoping that he can rally them to GOTV next Tuesday. Agree with what the posters have said, we (and they) need this seat to stay Democratic, and do it for Uncle Ted.

I don't see anything wrong with him going. He probably feels he owes it to the Kennedy family to do this.

31. It's about time. It's very, very late.
I think the White House was covering its ass by not going. If Coakley lost and Obama didn't go there, then it would make it harder to say it was a referendum on the President.

I'm glad he's going. It may be too late.

We need Coakely to win.

I'm afraid that too many Democrats are just too turned off by broken promises.
