Criminal bill partly legalizes abortion in Venezuela
National Assembly proposes increased penalties for insults against the Venezuelan President

The draft Organic Criminal Code (COP) the Committee on Interior Policy, Venezuelan National Assembly, is discussing on Wednesday provides for partial legalization of abortion.

Under article 186 of the bill, "women who interrupt pregnancy or allow another person to interrupt it, in of after the twelfth week of conception, will be punished with imprisonment from one to three years."

The text adds that "interruption of pregnancy (…) when the pregnant woman gives her consent and if less than twelve weeks after conception have passed will not be punished."

Under article 430 of the current Criminal Code, "women who had intentional abortion, relying on methods used by herself or by a third person, with her consent, shall be punished with imprisonment from six months to two years."

1. Header is premature, they need to have the law made
This seems to be premature. The Catholic church is very powerful, and I assume they will menace the congress with hell fire and other such non sense. I think abortion should be legal, good luck with this.

It is sad to see so many people tie themselves to old religions which we know, when we look at history, are political in nature. The Catholic church is an extension of the Roman Empire. And these evangelicals and other right wing Christians in the USA are trying to create their own theocratic empire. They are bad guys.

2. The catholic church has less social power in Venezuela than in Spain or Portugal.
Abortion has been completely tolerated in Venezuela for decades. Doctors do it and they've never been prosecuted. It's good if they make it official. 80% of the people already agree so the church can stay quiet...

3. Funny...
Took a long time for a socialist majority to legalize abortion.

4. On paper, it sounds like. Generally, if something isn't broken
people don't get around to fixing it.
