A third term for Lula?

(From an article published today in Semana)

Although President Lula has stated that he would not repeat his mandate, in Brazil, as in Colombia and Venezuela, legislators are proposing a referendum to change the constitution and enable his re-election.

(Lula) has said he would not seek a third term when his second presidency concludes in December 2010. But that has not slowed some of his supporters to push for a new candidacy for the most popular leader in the history of the nation, with approval levels over 80 percent.

This weekend, (Deputy Jackson Barreto) told the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that his proposal already had the minimun of signatures needed to call a referendum in September, in which a modification in the Magna Carta would be proposed that would permit a third consecutive term for Lula.

1. He's good for indigenous people, good for all the people, good for business. What's not to like?
And he does it without murdering people. Amazing!

Two teens among dead as cops target drug traffickers in massive operation

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian police killed at least 10 suspects — including two teenage boys — during operations against drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro early Wednesday.

The suspects, all males, included boys ages 15 and 16, Silvana Caminiti, a spokeswoman for Rio de Janeiro state's Health and Civil Defense ministry, confirmed in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The rest were in their early 20s, except for one 37-year-old man.
