Although President Lula has stated that he would not repeat his mandate, in Brazil, as in Colombia and Venezuela, legislators are proposing a referendum to change the constitution and enable his re-election.

(Lula) has said he would not seek a third term when his second presidency concludes in December 2010. But that has not slowed some of his supporters to push for a new candidacy for the most popular leader in the history of the nation, with approval levels over 80 percent.

This weekend, (Deputy Jackson Barreto) told the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that his proposal already had the minimun of signatures needed to call a referendum in September, in which a modification in the Magna Carta would be proposed that would permit a third consecutive term for Lula.
(Este fin de semana, el legislador informó al diario Folha de Sao Paulo que su propuesta ya cuenta con el mínimo de firmas necesarias para llamar a un referéndum en septiembre, en el que se plantearía una modificación de la Carta Magna para permitir un tercer mandato consecutivo de Lula.)
