Honduran Ruling Party Lawmaker Shot Dead

A Honduran congressman was shot dead by two masked gunmen on Saturday.

Congressman Mario Fernando Hernandez, 43, was a member of the ruling Liberal Party. He was shot at a school in northern Honduras when gunmen opened fire from a car. A lawyer and another unidentified man who were travelling with Hernandez were also killed in the attack.

Unknown gunmen have assassinated an Honduran ruling party lawmaker and two other people during an election campaign, police say.

Mario Fernando Hernandez, a Liberal Party congressman, was campaigning at a school in northern Nicaragua when gunmen opened fire from a vehicle Saturday, AP reported.

Witnesses said the assassins were wearing masks and that the vehicle they were riding in did not have a plate number.

Hernandez, 42, was among four congressional vice presidents and headed Honduras' legislature's security commission. The congressman was seeking re-election in the November 30 vote.

A lawyer and advisor to Hernandez as well as an unidentified man were also killed in Saturday's incident.
