Surgeon Gen: One puff from a cig can kill you, breathing someone else's smoke once can as well
WASHINGTON – Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking — or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke — could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.

...

"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.

Or the one that triggers someone else's: "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can," she said.

First we complain about over population and then we complain about people dying...

5. We need a Republican Surgeon General who...
will ignore shit like this, realizing that only about 21% of the population still smokes, and most of those are from the unemployed and otherwise less moneyed classes-- smoking is helping reduce the surplus population.

At any rate, life is the largest single cause of death.

6. Cigarettes cause everything!
Did you ever get the feeling that cigarettes are just the scapegoat for all the other pollutants that we've been subjected to? Like petrochemicals and all the nuclear tests. (He says as he lights his pipe)

7. i am sorry but that is bullshit. we breathe in how much polution every damned day
from things like pesticides and car exhausts! sure enough smoking is bad for you. but not one puff of it. as with anything else long term exposure is the problem. now, i am aware of second hand smoke being problematic from my oldest being at the doctor's every week with bronchial problems. my husband never smoked around her but the sitter did. and she started having problems after awhile. i know... why didn't you just take her somewhere else? couldn't afford to take her somewhere else. but as soon as i stopped taking her there as i became a SAHM her problem cleared up. i think it opened my husband's eyes. but again, he never smoked around emily. that being said, it wasn't one instance of exposure.... but over time so the argument is crap. except in the case of asthma which could trigger an attack.

10. A heart would have to have been in bad shape already for one puff to cause an attack.
This is like blaming a heart attack on your last double whopper and not the last 50 years of bad diet and no exercise.

Whether someone wants to smoke in their own home is there own perogative. When it effects me and others, then it is a whole different scenario.

14. If second hand smoke kills,
what does standing in proximity of an internal combustion engine do. I would challenge the SG to a demonstration. I will sit in a school bus filled with smokers, she can sit in her car with the exhaust piped into the cockpit...first one to bail out or die looses..Now tell me again how 2nd hand smoke is the most dangerous carcinogen on the planet..

15. The President smokes like mad and hides it
The Surgeon General is a tad on the heavy side to be telling others about heart health if you ask me. She looks like the Surgeon General under Mayor McCheese.
