Watching RESTREPO on National Geographic right now
http://www.daemonstv.com/2010/11/29/restrepo-review-national-geographic/

RESTREPO is the Sundance Film Festival’s 2010 Grand Jury Prize documentary winner. It chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. The movie, shot by veteran war journalists Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats. The only goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. – Araya Crosskill

2. I have had a very real sense of dread since it came on
I am very happy I never served and admire the ones who can.

3. Yep.
No surprises in this. That's the fucking problem.

the anxiety is over what is inevitably coming.

Young dudes half a world away wandering around with heavy weapons.

They ought to be getting laid in college.

6. We saw it at an almost empty move theater
and most in the audience were military. It was kind of we got it...

The people who REALLY need to watch it have not.

8. Watched from the POV of the villagers as well as the armed ignorant invaders.
Apart from solidarity uber alles and team spirit/gang loyalty sad nonsense, all with its truths, and the fact that clueless but innocent dumbasses can get put into service for powers they don't begin to comprehend, a good doc on their experiences.

Tragic.

I, having been there before the US began murdering them, Looked at it and saw the very few glimpses in the life of those they occupied.

Did you notice the terracing? Do you know that generations of canal building made those steep hillsides a part of a sustainable life? Did you see how the buildings were made? No, not Dubai or Trump monuments, but solid and lasting for generations.

Who are the primitives, the soul-less, the amoral and ruthless just-following-orders, those with no honor or integrity in this context?

Painful. I have a family member there in Afghanistan now, friends as well.

And the military facility I use for health care is Walter Reed. I see young troops there who are obvious casualties, recovering, have talked with some. Their spirit is amazing.

This documentary was powerful, compelling. I have lots to question now, personally.

10.  I have to applaud the National Geographic Channel for not censoring this film -cursing or otherwise
kinda shocking to hear so many "fucks" on basic cable. Good for them! I remember when PBS chose to censor a similar Iraq War Frontline ep rather than risk the wrath of crazy conservatives a few years back.
