The sensible and rational Republicans want Democrats to "return to the center"?
Edited on Tue Nov-09-10 10:20 AM by kentuck
What!!!!?

This bunch of crazies and lunatics and right-wing nutzoids say that the Democrats need to return to the "center". And the media regurgitates their wishes on command.

How insane is this? The Republican Party is so far to the right that many are paranoid about falling off the edge of their flat earth. It is so unreal to hear the Republicans say this. It is even more unreal to hear the media repeat it with a straight face.

1. our entire government is leaning dangerously to the right
both sides included. And this is the way the fascists get it to move ever rightward.

5. Propagating the myths....it's what they do.
The sheeple must be placated for their votes, reality would make them run away.

18. that's right. that's where they fight their battles...in the media. Doesn't have to
be true, in fact it hardly ever is.

Even if the dems went right from where they are, they would lose in the exchange of pundits, news analysis, press releases, articles, repeated propaganda, etc. the gop would find some angle with which to further punish and demonize dems. They've spent decades and billions of dollars to get to this point.

Analogy: It's as if dems spent all their time campaigning, reaching out to people, preparing a platform...and when election votes are tallied, all the gop has to do is manipulate vote and voters.

It's all fake. The low road rewards the gop. gop doesn't have to be on the correct side of issues...they don't have to be smart or knowledgable...they just have to take the low road and convince the gullible that a vote for gop keeps america safe.

So when dems compromise, they will be punished further by the gop and by progressives.

24. YEP ...
I am going to continue to fight, but the game is BADLY rigged ...

The media is now ALL IN with the republicans, and there really is not a lot we can do about it ...

Ds have to find a line in the sand to make a stand - IMO, they got deal a pair of Aces with the tax cuts, it is a win/win even with the media gaming it ... They SHOULD have had the battle over it two months ago, but it really is perhaps the last hope to make a stand and get the momentum going their way ...

I doubt they will have the guts to go all in on it ...

6. that is what comes of living in a liberal bubble I guess
Thinking you have the luxury of saying the Democrats are as bad as the Republicans, that the Democrats are too far to the right. Calling Obama a corporatist. You ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to the right.

Filtering them out gets you here. You are amazed? They think Obama is a Marxist. That's right, a Marxist. Much further to the left than the "progressives" who think he's a conservative give him credit for.

Therefore you end up not knowing what you are fighting against, or how bad it is.

12. As another poster in another thread said.............
We've got a RW party and we've got an EXTREME RW party.

I'm NOT RW in any way, shape or form, so what do I do? I've NEVER voted Republican and I've always voted straight Democratic, but I'm into politics because of POSITIONS, not because of "Rah, team!" I view politics as a way to change people's lives for the better. If even Democratic policies change people's lives for the WORSE, what do I do?

60% of the people hold "liberal" positions on ISSUES. I read that as 20% self described "liberals" and the 40% who self describe as "moderate". At this point, IF Dem policies change people's lives for the worse, then maybe it's time to let the Republicans have their head and make it REALLY bad. Maybe that's what it will take to wake up all those "moderates".

What's a shame is that we haven't even TRIED to lobby for the "liberal" policies that are so popular with the actual public. And now, all these "centrists" don't even want us to speak out. So what do I do? Just roll over and die? Ignore the Reich? Or do I fight harder than EVER for the correct (in my view) policies? I'm a fighter, so I know what I'm going to do.

I'm not sure what point you're getting at.

Do you mean that you have to compromise even if you hold liberal positions?

21. Almost everybody agrees with helping those who need it
it is the how to help them and to what extent that brings about division. A public option supposedly had 70+ support, but less than half were willing to pay for it.

The liberal solution of a mandate needed to run it, provide it and pay for it, was not accepted.

20. That's because there are so many people to the right of you
People who think Obama is a marxist and are outraged that he even tried what you dismiss as a Health Plan.

You live in the midst of the people you live in the midst of, at that time. That's a reality. You can call the Democrats "right wing" and the others "extreme right wing," but that just shows you how far to the left you are.

Of course they will not "even try" what you want. Look at how much screaming there is about the HCR you would label no doubt right wing and corporatist. It's from the right. Even that plan endangers their "freedom" blah, blah, blah. That's about 40% of the electorate. Then there is the 40% in the middle.

25. ABSOLUTELY ...
just surreal that with the other side playing by completely low road rules, having absolutely not intellectual honesty or compunction with absolutely flat out lying and making shiite up, with positions that are truly extreme beyond belief ... That people on our team nibble away at the fringes ...

8. What is even MORE unreal is watching the Democrats falling all over themselves to try to do it.
I hae been a staunch democratic voter since 1968, but I am so disgusted with "our" party, I am getting over my long interest in politics. The people we have elected to Washington are egomaniacal little shits who do not deserve my attention or support, nor even the energy required for me to criticize them. Fuck them all, from the top down.

16. Take heart. It was the Blue Dogs who lost BIG last Tuesday. Not the liberals.
To me that says that Republicans are full of shit. They know that the Blue Dogs got stomped. They know that they didn't get rid of Nancy Pelosi entirely. And they are afraid.

17. It's the VOTERS who are the problem!
In a democracy, elected officials can't get too far ahead of their constituencies.
So until we make the voters more liberal, we aren't going to have politicians liberal enough to follow through with the programs that we liberals want.

What a difference it would make if Democrats were to go on a nation-wide campaign to promote my http://LiberalslikeJesus.Org/ web site, which is designed to show all those conservative "Christians" who vote Republican religiously that they are barking up THE WRONG TREE! Here's an email I just got which illustrates my point perfectly:
"Dear Ray,
I was so excited to find your website! I love all the information I found. For years, I have kept a somewhat low profile as a liberal democrat. When my mother was alive she taught me to vote democrat but register republican so no one would know my political affiliation. Even my father who is a very conservative republican doesn't want the rest of our family to know that I am a democrat. I find it all very comical. When I tell people that I am a democrat or more accurately, a liberal, they believe that I cannot also be a Christian! I have been a liberal since I was 17 in high school because I simply believed that the democratic party does more to help people than the republican party.
Please add me to your email list. I look forward to updates. I will also probably print some of the pages to use for discussion or to defend my point of view."
AnnMarie"

15. Drifting RIGHT is what got our asses kicked last week.
The failure of the president to capitalize on the huge victories of 2008 led to this mess. Now the crazies on the right can say voters gave them a mandate. Voters who voted with us in 2008 and against us in 2010 (or stayed home) did so because the president did NOT lead in the direction he and our party promised in 2008.

Frankly, the president's denial on why his cart is in the ditch is a huge problem. He created this mess, and caving in to the right isn't the way out.
