Larsen beats Koster in 2nd District

The Democratic U.S. House member has won a close race against Republican John Koster, The Associated Press predicted Monday evening.

Larsen's victory would give Democrats five of Washington's nine U.S. House seats. Previously the advantage was six to three. However nationally Republicans captured more than 60 seats to regain control of the chamber.

"This election proves that every vote counts. And I want to thank every person who took the time to participate and cast a ballot in this race," Larsen said in a statement. "The political landscape has changed and the new majority now has an equal responsibility to govern. One lesson of the Democratic party's loss is that Americans want bipartisanship. The American people want the parties to work together."

With nearly all of the expected vote counted in early returns, Larsen led by 4,408 votes, and held 51 percent of the vote, compared to Koster's 49 perent. Larsen trailed Koster by less than 1,500 votes after the initial count on election night last week, but took the lead on Wednesday and has steadily increased it.
