Massive crater opens up in German town

Associated Press November 1, 2010

A crater some 65 feet (20 meters) deep has opened up in a residential area of an eastern German town — swallowing a car and a garage door but causing no injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Schmalkalden at about 3 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Monday by a resident who reported hearing unusual noises. Six houses and 25 people were evacuated.

13. Guys - this is Germany, not America!
He had several weeks vacation, unlimited sick days, several days paid time off and, in the event he could screw up enough to get fired, wouldn't have to worry about his healthcare!

He'll be fine.

An American employee, however... not so much.

14. Yes, it's Germany. An environmental event like this will have people saying:
"What went wrong? How did we fail the environment? How can we make sure this doesn't happen again?"

They care about stuff like this in Germany.

15. What got my attention was the power and comm lines
Without support for probably 150 ft they are still intact. I did some training for Siemens a few years ago and the icebreaker intro was a discussion about rebuilding the infrastructure after the war.
They went for the best technology available and put us to shame within a decade.
